First snow

I am wondering of today's weather portends a severe winter ahead. Usually in these parts, we get a few insignificant flurries before any major accumulating snowfall. Not this time. The first few snowflakes to hit the ground was soon accompanied by countless kajillion brethren throughout the day, leaving me with about 4-5 inches of the stuff. I decided to poke my lens out the front door and take a single shot, using whatever settings I had leftover from whatever I was doing with the camera prior. This ended up being an 8 second handheld shot at ISO 320 in the murky darkness:

Kinda spooky, no? Maybe I should be glad there are three different 4wd trucks in the driveway.

Wow, that is way cool.

What camera were you using with that kind of ISO my little Nikon doesn't do ISO 320 except perhaps in auto mode.

Now that's the way my childhood winters in Maryland looked!

At least, in my wee child memories...

Camera is a Canon 30D with a 17-85mm lens. Exposure was auto, focus manual, 17mm at f4, ISO 320 for 8 secs. The 30D has a huge range of ISO settings up to 1600. I love taking these kinda of available light shots.

I thought it was a DSLR as that kind of ISO was mighty clean. My little Nikon CoolPix P5000 starts to get a little noisy at 200 but definitely beginning at 400 ISO.

But it does well at 64 and 100 ISO though.

I almost never use the flash on the camera btw.

Yeah, when I was a young 'un, there were some really heavy snows that I remember well. It's not the same these days, last winter I think there was only one instance of appreciable accumulation that needed snowblower action.

DSLRs in general have really good low-light performance because their sensors are so big. Some day in the future I might upgrade to a full-frame DSLR like the Canon 5D.

Yeah, I know, if I could I might consider the Nikon new full frame models myself. Heck, I'll be happy when I can get to just the D40 or the D40x but for now, I'm quite happy with my little P5000.

THAT is a VERY interesting photo. It looks almost like a still from a Guy Maddin or Brothers Quay movie. Very atmospheric. You have a talent with the camera.

It DOES look rather like a painting. One of those older ones that are sepia-toned with age.

We received our first big snowstorm here in New Hampshire on Monday. "Only" 4-6 inches, but that still seems like a lot to THIS Oregon transplant! (Funny thing is, I made it into work but several natives didn't.)
