St-st-studio

When posting on LJ, more often than not my location says 'studio'. I thought it nice to give people a glimpse of where those posts come from. I've been trying to clean things up a bit, pare down to the bare minimum but still allowing the setup to serve for what I use it for mostly, which is music post-production and mixing (I dont do anything original anymore), transcription, editing and recording. I also do video work here as well, the two small monitors show video input and output from the PC. This is also the control center for my LAN, with the servers downstairs in the messy workshop, I can perform all my backups, manage the media libraries and just plain geek out. This setup is nothing compared to some of the professional musicians on my friends list, but for a hobby, it works well for me. Plus, it's always changing.

Studio setup

I figure I best post a picture of this before it turns back into the disaster it's been for ages. Not shown is all the crap still sitting on the floor and the sofa on the left. That's gonna go soon.

Yep! My favorite audio editor (well, since Adobe scarfed up Cool Edit Pro and, thankfully, didnt crap it all up). Can you tell the song that's loaded by looking at the waveform? Hint, it's not what is shown in my 'current music' entry. ;)

I just had a geekgasm.

[identity profile] greatbearmd.livejournal.com 2008-04-04 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
NOW CLEAN THAT UP!

[identity profile] jrjarrett.livejournal.com 2008-04-04 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
I need help with that <eg>

I, too, think I just added to "all the crap still sitting on the floor and the sofa on the left."

:-P~~~~

Well, it's obviously not something that came out in in the past ten years, or else the waveform would be totally brickwalled!

No kidding. Here's REM's latest square wave song "Living Well Is The Best Revenge". Because, well, recording well is a lost art, and there seems no revenge for it. It's crap like this pushed by major labels that takes the enjoyment out of music. I will often rework recent releases in order to make them a bit more listenable. I find myself getting headaches listening to so much new stuff, since, even when listened to a reasonable levels, sounds like it's being blasted. not that I dont like my music cranked on occasions, I just appreciate loud and clear. I normalize and peak restore stuff to make it more like it should be. Sadly, once there's clipping, there's no bringing back the nuances.

clipped

The song shown in the studio photo is the Raiders' "Indian Reservation (Cherokee Nation)". In all of it's ancient, analog, non-clipped glory.

Well, first you need to remove your clothes. Then you gotta take pictures.

[identity profile] ciddyguy.livejournal.com 2008-04-04 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
OMG,

Here is mine and the file you see is taken from an ANALOG vinyl source. Sound Forge 2 channel program is what I'm using.

Track was recorded to DVD-R, ripped via DVD Audio Extractor (much like EAC) to a WAV file and from there, it's ready for SF.

While I don't have a mixer, I do restore vinyl sources when needed for a mix CD and such. Computer sits on the floor under desk, out of pic, the integrated and cassette deck go back to the mid 80's, the speakers are so, so and sit on the desk.

BTW, I've noticed that by the mid 90's we had brickwalled recordings, I have several CD's from that period, namely Hootie and the Blowfish, Blues Traveler to name 2 that have over recorded their stuff.

Mind you, poorly processed stuff has been around for years, BTO Anyone?

Nice setup! That even looks like Adobe Audition 1.x on that monitor... I use that program myself!

[identity profile] cpj.livejournal.com 2008-04-04 11:08 am (UTC)(link)
Damn. I had no idea you were an audio geek.

[identity profile] md-mancub.livejournal.com 2008-04-04 11:41 am (UTC)(link)

::jealous look::

[identity profile] budmassey.livejournal.com 2008-04-04 11:48 am (UTC)(link)
I am afraid. Very afraid. But that userpic sure is hot.

[identity profile] arktos62.livejournal.com 2008-04-05 11:35 am (UTC)(link)
Crikey! I didn't know you were a rocket scientist. Can you take me the year 2525 with all that technology?

[identity profile] liftinmoose.livejournal.com 2008-04-05 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Impressive... for some reason I never knew that yer such a sound/music guy!

[identity profile] greatbearmd.livejournal.com 2008-04-10 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I've been using the program since it was Cool Edit Pro. I am glad that Adobe didnt muck around with it too much.

[identity profile] greatbearmd.livejournal.com 2008-04-10 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Big time audio geek. I figured I left enough clues in various entries.

[identity profile] greatbearmd.livejournal.com 2008-04-10 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Desk as in desk, or desk as in mixer?

[identity profile] greatbearmd.livejournal.com 2008-04-10 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Only in the Zager and Evans sense.

[identity profile] greatbearmd.livejournal.com 2008-04-10 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
I figured everyone knew that by now.

[identity profile] greatbearmd.livejournal.com 2008-04-10 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
People usually are afraid of my userpics.

[identity profile] greatbearmd.livejournal.com 2008-04-10 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
I just gotta do more with it than I have been in the past several years.

[identity profile] greatbearmd.livejournal.com 2008-04-10 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Polygram had some of the most overdriven recordings in the BTO era.Every cymbal crash threatened a set of tweeters.

[identity profile] ciddyguy.livejournal.com 2008-04-10 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Two BTO albums I have are Not Fragile and BTO II, both on the Mercury label - on vinyl and now sound halfway decent with a Sure M97XE cart mounted to a cheapish Kenwood semi auto turntable and they were horrid sounding with my older Ortifon Super OM-10 cart with its bump in the upper mids and lacking true mids and low end. Ugh.

[identity profile] liftinmoose.livejournal.com 2008-04-10 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Well I guess *now* everybody does :)

[identity profile] pulsecub.livejournal.com 2008-04-10 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
I started using it when it was Cool Edit Pro as well. Have you seen version 3.0 of Audition? I'm still making up my mind whether I like it or not (same goes for 2.0).
