St-st-studio

When posting on LJ, more often than not my location says 'studio'. I thought it nice to give people a glimpse of where those posts come from. I've been trying to clean things up a bit, pare down to the bare minimum but still allowing the setup to serve for what I use it for mostly, which is music post-production and mixing (I dont do anything original anymore), transcription, editing and recording. I also do video work here as well, the two small monitors show video input and output from the PC. This is also the control center for my LAN, with the servers downstairs in the messy workshop, I can perform all my backups, manage the media libraries and just plain geek out. This setup is nothing compared to some of the professional musicians on my friends list, but for a hobby, it works well for me. Plus, it's always changing.

I figure I best post a picture of this before it turns back into the disaster it's been for ages. Not shown is all the crap still sitting on the floor and the sofa on the left. That's gonna go soon.

Date: 2008-04-04 03:49 am (UTC)No kidding. Here's REM's latest
square wavesong "Living Well Is The Best Revenge". Because, well, recording well is a lost art, and there seems no revenge for it. It's crap like this pushed by major labels that takes the enjoyment out of music. I will often rework recent releases in order to make them a bit more listenable. I find myself getting headaches listening to so much new stuff, since, even when listened to a reasonable levels, sounds like it's being blasted. not that I dont like my music cranked on occasions, I just appreciate loud and clear. I normalize and peak restore stuff to make it more like it should be. Sadly, once there's clipping, there's no bringing back the nuances. The song shown in the studio photo is the Raiders' "Indian Reservation (Cherokee Nation)". In all of it's ancient, analog, non-clipped glory.

Date: 2008-04-04 04:53 am (UTC)Here is mine and the file you see is taken from an ANALOG vinyl source. Sound Forge 2 channel program is what I'm using.
Track was recorded to DVD-R, ripped via DVD Audio Extractor (much like EAC) to a WAV file and from there, it's ready for SF.
While I don't have a mixer, I do restore vinyl sources when needed for a mix CD and such. Computer sits on the floor under desk, out of pic, the integrated and cassette deck go back to the mid 80's, the speakers are so, so and sit on the desk.
