September Photo Challenge: SNAKE

Well, not really, but this little guy took up residence in a flower pot I brought outside from the living room when I was drying out the overwatered plants and trimming them. Not really sure what sort of snake it is, I lump these in the garter snake category.

snakepot

I saw this snake slither across the front walkway the other day. He scooted off in the flower bed before I could grab him. Jeff does not like snakes. That's putting it mildly. So I end up being the wreptile wrangler any time a snake shows up around the house. Or, in a couple cases. inside.

I plucked the little dude out of the pot after letting him keep me company while working outside and on the plants and beds. He did not mind being picked up, and seemed to watch the scenery go by during his trip to the back yard. When I returned, the neighbor and her kids were at the front door selling Girl Scout cookies. I got Trefoils, like I always do.

This is a really nice photograph, however, it really isn't a "shape" photo. Shape indicates a 2D or silouette object...all the objects in this photo are actual objects. A Shape object infers another object (like a shadow does or like a silouette does from lightcast that causes it to be 2D instead of 3D). I'll put this in as your entry, but if you want to resubmit another photo, I encourage you to do so. I don't make comments like this to be a jerk. I do it so you understand the concept and can use it in your photographic compositions. I'll keep this one as your entry until I hear you want to put something else in. Please do it before tomorrow afternoon (Los Angeles Time) so I have time to put the recap post together. Thanks - and let me know if you'll be resubmitting...

LOL, This was not a serious post though. I got the inspiration from the person that submitted 'SNAPE' (and made me choke on my drink).

I will see if I can find something good as an actual entry in the short time left, if I do, I will post it. Sorry to play with the wording though. ;)

awww! she's cute! I personally don't mind snakes as long as I know they're non-poisonous. Otherwise I'm wary but not scared.

Wow - that's a beautiful snake! He looks like he's painted on that ceramic. Nice shot!

I had taken the camera back in the house and left the snake alone after taking the picture. I wish I had thought of taking pictures of the snake while I was holding it.

coloration looks similar to Lampropeltis Triangulum, otherwise known as a Milk Snake. I can't really make out the shape of the head too well. Which is very helpful in determining what species of snake it is, and if it is poisonous or not.

I used to have a book about snakes around here, but it's lost among all the stuff in the house. I should dig around for it or find some web resource in order to keep a tally on all the critters I find around here.

There are very few poisonous species of snake around these parts, and most of those are water snakes. I mostly leave them alone, or at worst take them away from the house and gardens to keep Jeff happy.

When I was younger, I was practically the young Steve Irwin. I went so far as to catch Cottonmouths and Copperheads. My mother was always absolutely terrified of them all. I remember laughing so hard the one day she ran away from a 2 foot long garter snake with a 3 foot hoe in her hands screaming.

2 years ago we had a similar thing happen. We were in the process of taking our plants back outside for the spring and summer. John pulled a plant off a shelf and thought he saw something moving in it. Sure enough, it was a baby garter snake. It was especially surprising because the plant had been in the house since the fall of the previous year. We figured that mama snake must have laid an egg in the plant which hatched some time during the winter... I check for that now :o)

Apparently this was one of several born around here, since Jeff was in the garden pulling weeds and found the same thing slithering away from him. That put a stop to his work there for a while.

There is a lot of wildlife around the house here, that's for sure.
