greatbear: (obviously gay)

Wouldja look at that

Well, imagine that. American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert says that he's gay, ending any speculation by the two dozen or so people who are hopelessly clueless (and still have not figured out the Village People). Good on him. While many people had wished that he'd been more out front with his sexuality during the show, that's not the focus of the contest. Mentioned in the article, While Lambert is proud of his sexuality – "I embrace it," he says. "It's just another part of me" – he's focused on his career. "I'm trying to be a singer, not a civil rights leader.", such sentiments to me are more in line with my thinking - I'm not defined by my sexuality either, I'm just an average dude with some unique traits, and I also happen to be gay. Not that being gay is so unique, really.

I credit Adam for piquing my interest in American Idol much more than it ever had been in the past. After hearing about his amazing talent as well as unusual interpretations of some old standards, I found I just had to hear what he'd come up with next, and just about every performance was off the hook. While some wanted him to be the winner of the contest, I think he's better off being second banana, he should not be nearly as boxed in by the demands of the A.I. producers and can essentially write his own ticket once he pays off his obligations to the show.

And maybe the band Queen has found their new, er, King. Or queen, as the case may be.

I know...The first time I heard him open his mouth...The first thing I thought was that Freddy Mercury has been reborn. but in a prettier body with a prettier vocal timbre.

excuse me while I get all tingly and verklempt:

SQEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've usually dismissed the show because it seemed to be an outlet of musical mediocrity when I would tune in. And I had no interest in the schadenfeude-laden first quarter of the show where the awfulness gets taken out. Thanks to YouTube vids that people would post, I got hooked on Adams showmanship and delivery. It didn't matter to me that he was basically just a dress away from being a drag queen, the kid has incredible chops and knows how to use them. During the final show, when Queen took the stage I basically yeled out "PERFECT!" even before the singing started. I mean, I like Paul Rodgers, but fronting Queen is just not his gig. While there would never be another Freddie Mercury, Adam Lambert seems such a good fit. Not filling Freddie's shoes, but wearing his own. I hope Adam has a great career ahead of him.

Is he the one that managed to marry the rock dude look with, well, a whole ton of make up?
Interesting to see who'll make up his audience demographic.

Yep, that's the guy. He seemed to attract all sorts of demographics IMO. The look he had and the interpretation of some of the songs he selected made me think he'd be more in line of Robert Smith more than Boy George, he does the goth thing well. Heck, I think he could pick up on old-skool glam just as easy, he's that good at being showy.

I totally agree with your assessment!

I can't agree with you more. I was not all that into AI this year (honestly, I have not been since the year Fantasia won), but I did follow all the tabloid-like speculation about Adam - is he? Isn't he? Meh!

I did however watch the final and could not believe how AWESOME he was in the final song with Queen. Yep the winner (what was his name?) also was singing, but it was obvious where all the power lay in that performance.

By the way - I TOTALLY love the icon you used for this post!
