Country music is changing. Ever so slightly.

This is Phil Vassar. Jeff and I heard this song on the radio earlier in the year while camping at Deep Creek Lake. Completely unexpected from the backwoods radio station we had on. I think it's cute and worth the watch/listen.

I'm actually a little more surprised by that than I am by the states that have passed gay marriage.

He had a song out a while back that I really liked, "I'll Take That As a Yes"

I'll give him points for originality. A lot of country music has been kind of empty and vapid, lately.

Whenever Jeff has the country station playing on the radio, I will often play Country Music Cliche Checklist™ to see how many cliche subjects so typical in country music are mentioned in one song. Jesus, whiskey, church, pickup trucks, heartache, trailers, cheating, the US flag, drinking, horses, bibles, guns, cattle, Texas, beer, soldiers, jeans, lying, being on the road, America, boots, etc. It's amazing how many of these can crop up in one song. All too often the songs are cloying and have practically the feel of product placement. It's these songs that seemed to be played at a certain segment of listeners as a form of enabling. Granted, there are some very good songs that tell stories, make you laugh or get you thinking, but they seem few and far between. It's almost like Required Conservative Listening when Rush Limbaugh is in repeats and it's not time for church.

People will often say they like country music as a way of escaping the hollowness of pop music, but this genre is just as bad, if not worse.

The video makes it look as though Bobby does this just to get free drinks at the bar, but the song tends to say it's more of an ongoing personal preference. But there's a definite message of acceptance, there's no negativity or judgment. Purely live-and-let-live. It's refreshing and quite startling.

Quite a bit of 'new country' has brought with it edgier lyrics, more diverse themes and more worldly thinking from younger generations and from other genres like rock and soul. It's about time. The old guard is not all closed-minded. After all, Willie Nelson did this song for Brokeback Mountain. Of course it became known as "The Gay Cowboy Song", but he did not even write it. It was done long before by someone I don't remember, but it's so perfect in this context.

Only recently could I find a video or some other postable version I could use. I was reminded of the song today and searched again, and I struck gold. ;)

Non-US readers can access this here.

I'll take Paul, but Bobbi does nothing for me, pre- or post-shave.
