Kiss me I'm... Jewish?

Jeff and I were at the local grocer this past Sunday. I usually get a few bagels since they are usually very good at that store, and they have a variety to choose from. This time, however, I was completely floored. I had to buy these two that were in the display case:

Yes, they are a very bright green. I am assuming for St. Patrick's Day which will be here soon. I am not aware of any upcoming Martian invasions, though the latest thing with the solar flare-ups and that whole 2012 foofaraw might play a part. Not to mention radiation escaping from Japanese nucular reactors 'n' stuff.

These things are simply the "regular" bagels with what appears to be a gallon of green food coloring added. They are delightfully green inside and out, yet taste just like the Earthlings I also picked up that day. They stay green toasted, and are deeee-lish. Sometimes you just have to have fun with your food.

But, really. Green bagels?

I'm... GREEN WITH ENVY.

*sigh* Couldn't help it...

I'm stunned.

They look amazing, but also like slices of Wonder bread that I've had around much too long.

Enjoy 'em while they are still fresh, and have that unique bagel texture, and before they develop a green coloration on the interior that isn't caused by food coloring. ;)

They look like wooden dowels. I wonder if melted butter/margarine would take on the food colouring.

More importantly, I wonder what color these little jewels will take on, um, later in their food cycle. Ick.

I was thinking the same thing! Ew.

When a mate and I lived in Edinburgh together and were very broke we would buy a huge sack of rice, some veg and cheese and pretty well ate the same thing each day for the month. We became so bored with it we used food colouring to spice it up visually. We were also ingesting quite a lot of cheap buy very effective lsd.
It all became a bit much.

Mind you, not that much further in the future and still in Edinburgh a few of us, again sharing a flat, were again so broke that we actually couldn't buy food. We did however have all the condiments. We made a soup using salt, pepper, ketchup, hot water and...green, ultra absorbent economy toilet paper as a thickener.

It was indeed filling if not particularly nutritious.

Look at the bag of bagels carefully. Is "Soylent Green" one of the ingredients?

[identity profile] budmassey.livejournal.com 2012-03-14 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG! Now that's an interesting observation.

[identity profile] notdefined.livejournal.com 2012-03-14 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
About like this?

[identity profile] budmassey.livejournal.com 2012-03-14 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I like it better that way.

[identity profile] notdefined.livejournal.com 2012-03-14 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It would be different. But then, that would fit in with the rest of our city. :)

[identity profile] budmassey.livejournal.com 2012-03-14 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
of course, they could cover it with LEDs and change the color for different occasions. Now THAT would suit SFO perfectly, IMHO.

It was St David's Day on March 1. I don't recall there being red and green food and drink to commemorate the patron saint of Wales.
