I think we all assumed it to be something fun, but I didnt see that in the rules. Hell, I dont recall any>/i> rules. The guy did have extra time on his hands according to his entry too, and used this exercise to get familiar with s new software package. Compared with most of the tripe coming out of VH-1 and EmptyVee, this blows those away.

I was kinda of afraid of that reaction. (butchbud) I'm truly not trying to "best" or serve anyone. Really. I do this stuff for a living and I had the extra time, so why not create something that expresses myself?

Trust me...I envy those who did this lip sync thing and made it fun and silly. I wish I could pull that kind of stuff off, but to be honest, I'm too self conscious. The very fact that I did this was an exercise in asserting myself. It was never my intention to insult anyone.

And oh.. by the way.. since when is a day and a half too much time for anyone? Are we all that ramped up that we can't slow down and spend a little extra time to create something meaningful?

Oh, trust me, you didnt insult me, and I doubt anyone else. There were no 'rules' set down at the start of this thing, and that's what made it beautiful. My comment about getting 'served' was not to say that our efforts are somehow lessened, instead it raised the bar by which someone can take this exercise. We are all better for it.

Again, there were no rules, specifications or guidelines to meet, just a lipsync. Each one is different. All are good. And I truly liked yours. Like I commented before, compare your meme entry with the kind of thing found on the television music stations. You made an incredible statement here. And you made it uniquely yours. I'm very impressed. The 'lipsync meme' just helped drive home the fact that there is incredible talent residing in some of my fellow LJers, and it goes a long way in keeping my faith in humanity in these days of questionable actions by others.

I just compiled a CD a couple weeks ago titled "Spaced!" and this song was one of them.

I really enjoyed your video, and you lip sync very well too. :o)

A little disappointed with that bio, they wrote more about David Bowie than Peter Schilling. Sure, a nod to Bowie is appropriate, but this bio isn't really about Schilling, it's about Bowie. I mean, where is Peter Schilling now? Oh well.

The song tells the story of Major Tom, an astronaut who has "really made the grade," and the eyes of the world are on him as he is about to be blasted into space. But Major Tom's solo trip ends in tragedy, as he mysteriously informs ground control that "I'm feeling very still, and I think my spaceship knows which way to go. Tell my wife I love her very much..." There are a number of takes on this early Bowie classic. One is that this is a song about self-destruction, a theme Bowie would return to in "Rock and Roll Suicide" and on his "Station to Station" album.

It goes on to say:

Clearly Major Tom's demise seems to have been less an accident than a conscious decision to detach himself from the planet below.

All the montage images, including 911, in the video represent "a" (not necessarily "the") state of the world today. Terror, War, Violence, Natural Disaster, Evil, Suicide, Death, etc, etc, etc...

Like Major Tom, there are times when I wish I could just rocket off into space and escape this depressing, chaotic world. Luckily, there are forces to counter those depressing issues, however there are just times when the bad seems to overshadow the good and you just wind up wanting to give up or surrender.

The lyrics in Major Tom talks about a "light" or "life" commanding him to come home. One could assume the "light" represents God, Death, or Drugs and outer space is Heaven, Nothingness, or being high...but ultimately something is influencing Major Tom to find peace and the tranquility of outer space is where he finds it.

Bowie later sheds some light in a followup song hinting that Major Tom has experienced all the "highs" of heaven, but is ready to return. Some people think this is an allegory about Bowie's drug abuse, which may be true, however for us, we all need to realize that this hunk of rock is our home, like it or not, and we should work towards accepting certain things about it and working towards ways for humanity to get along with one another. Trying to escape from reality isn't necessarily the answer.
