A Snow of Silence

Okay, I admit it. I love it when it snows. It may be a pain to deal with, shoveling, plowing, snowblower sending it high into the air only to have it drift back and cover me, and dont even begin to get me started on having to deal with countless idiots on the roads in it. No, that is not what I like about it. It's the eerie yet comforting silence at night that it brings, the cozy feeling sitting by the fire or laying warm under a pile of blankets with the stuff falling outside. It is as though the entire world around me comes to a halt for once and just lets the snow go about it's business, falling.

This picture is the view out of the studio window right now. The walkway lights and the lamp post along with the sodium light from the garage providing the light, and the big Blue Atlas cedar tree burdened with the sticky wet snowfall mingling low and wide with the azaleas piled with the stuff. And dead silence. Sometimes it is so quiet all you can hear is the snow hitting the ground. The yard and areas beyond are strangely light, with a hazy appearance from being seen through the falling snow, eventually fading to the orange-gray of the night sky in the distance. Yep, this is the part of winter that I like. I wont even worry about tomorrow's commute after the required digging out. No, instead I will relish the calm, quiet ambience provided by Ma Nature's frosty security blanket.

I'm with you. Snow is great and I don't mind the side effects too much. Well, especially if the cupboards are stocked.

Great photo too by the way!

I'm well-stocked with food, in no rush tomorrow (that I know of), and laying under a pile of blankets with the laptop. X-D

Thanks for the comment on the photo, I really should do more posts like this. I love taking pictures, and I need to share the better ones.

Dang, that's like deja vu all over again! I guess it"s a pretty much universal feeling in people. At least those who have the chance to experiece such a scene.

That is a gorgeous picture. Frustrates me that we'll never see anything like that in Texas. I need to move sometime in the near future.

Beautiful.
You've really captured the silence, and the heavy embrace of winter nights.

I miss the snow. Not shoveling, or the long melt, but the cozy feeling of a huge, fluffy quilt spread over the world.
Thanks for sharing yours!

I love the quiet of new-fallen snow too, because in my neighborhood, it usually means the crack-whores and dealers have taken shelter from the street for a change.

I love snow right as it is coming down or shortly after... while it is still covering the trees. I hate it a few days later when it starts getting dirty and dingy looking.

Oh man... Is there ANY way I can get you to send me a copy of this pic? I have a dear love of snow. I wrote this about 2 years ago. Ill let it speak for me on the topic.

A Walk in the Wind

It's a peaceful night in this small southern town
And the cold Winter breeze has finally blown in.
There were clouds in the afternoon sky today,
But the weather was great for a walk in the wind.

The sun was just setting when I stepped out the door
To be met by a breeze that tussled my hair.
I could feel the cold kiss of the first winter frost
As it came in and danced like a leaf on the air.

The neighborhood lights were beginning to come on
One at a time down the darkening street.
As I walked in my jacket with my scarf on my shoulders
I could feel the cold deepen as the air lost its heat.

Inhaling the season prior to leaving
My lungs opened wide to receive the night chill.
I walked out of the yard with my arms open wide.
I looked up at the evening sky and was thrilled.

The wind was whipping and tossing my scarf
As it whistled and ran around cars and trees.
Like a friendly puppy, it nipped at my nose,
Then it turned, lifted, and played with the leaves.

The trees, with their chattering branches, sang
To the tune of the zephyrous spirits, and swayed
Beneath the night sky. Accented by starlight,
A sight to behold, never seen in the day.

The full moon was shining with vigoured intensity
As it played 'Peek-A-Boo" through the clouds in the sky.
I looked up, smiled, laughed, and leapt.
I shouted with joy at the thrill of the night!

Oh, winds, uplift me this crisp Winter evening!
Infuse in my spirit your joyous glee!
Guide me through harshness of Life with humor.
O' Come, Winter Winds...Intoxicate me!

I am a child of the day and the night.
Earth, and Sky, Moon, and Sun.
Of North, of South, of East, of West.
Body, Mind, and Spirit, are one.

My eyes are wide open to the wondrous nighttime.
I reach out and feel as the season infuses me.
I breathe out a frost on the cold winter air.
I am so alive! Most defiantly!

OH! How I LIVE for the winds of the Winter!
My soul shouts aloud in danceing ecstasy.
And standing there, laughing, at the scope of it all,
I reach for the sky, and I weep, happily.

Crying and laughing and singing and smiling,
I turned the corner to make my way home.
And as I arrived, safe and sound once again,
I took off my jacket, and the wind hugged me close.

Now, here I sit, by the fire, all warm.
I look out of the window and the first snow is falling.
And as I rise to put my coat on and play
I can hear the Snow... and the Wind... calling.

I love snow too. The city, normally noisy and speedy, becomes absolutely quiet and tranquil after a good snow fall.

There is no good blizzard this year like previous years. But I am hoping.
