Here's my turkey, fresh outta the oven. What made me laugh then take this picture was the fact that I was using two thermometers to check for doneness and the thought occurred to me that it seems it does not take long for me to fit gauges to certain things. This is looking just as bad as some of my cars.

A high-performance turkey?

Time to take this one for a spin!

I monitored my turkey by plugging my probe into the oven so it would alarm when the temp was right. I love hi-tech gadgets...lol

What has worked for us is to put the bird in a 450 oven for an hour in a covered pan for an hour, then reduce the temp to 350 and bake for a total time of 10 minutes per pound. Remove the lid few minutes before it's done to brown the skin. Butter the skin and sprinkle flour over the bird at the start for a nice crisp skin. It's done when the inside temps are about 165 degrees.

This reminds me of my partner's nephew. He'd eat turkey, chicken, fish, beef, whatever with no problem. BUT, if you tell him that it's dead turkey, chicken, etc, he'd want nothing to do with it. I like waiting till he's mostly done eating before I say "Mmmm, that was the best dead _____ ever!". He'd get upset. X-D

I think it's the angle that the pic was taken and the depth of field. It's a 14 pound bird, and one thermometer is a commmon oven thermometer, the other is one of those little pocket with a dial less than an inch. Being that they were sticking up closer to the lens, I guess that made them look big (and I agree, they do look big, and the turkey much smaller than it is. lol).

My bro-in-law did two turkeys yesterday, one in da oven, the other on da grill and he used two electronic thermometers that beep when the inside reaches 160-165. The unit itself sits outside the oven and a wired probe goes into the bird and the door can close on the cable safely. High tech but works wonderfully.

Both birds came out wonderfully and there was virtually no meat left after all was consumed. 19 people were at the festivities yesterday. :-)
