Something nice this past weekend
Mar. 9th, 2004 05:17 pmAs you may (or may not) know by now, my mom has been going through some rather intense treatments for lung cancer. She found out about her condition right around the end of December. One recurring question she had for the doctors was if she would still be able to see a series of five operas at the Met in NYC that she had gotten tickets for back in November. Alas, the doctors said that she would be in the midst of her chemo and radiation treatments by then, and there'd be no way to take that week off. Being that she has the weekends off of treatments, I told her that I would be more than happy to take her to NYC for the Friday and Saturday shows (the last two of the 5) if she felt up to it.
She did.
So, we packed up the Cooper for weekend trip, headed up to Da Big Apple after her afternoon radiation session and I am very happy to report that she had a great time. She got to see Don Giovanni and Tosca(which was supposedly the last opera that Luciano Pavarotti was to sing at the Met). We stayed at the West Side YMCA (cue Village People music). The food at the Y is good, the room, though tiny, is nice. She makes this trip every year (I buy her tickets for her birthday) and she stays at that particular YMCA each time. This is the first time I accompanied her to NYC. While she did her thing at the opera, I was hanging out with friends, going out to dinner, the Dugout, Ty's, or shopping.
Saturday we took a walk through Central Park, and I got us a carriage ride through the park as well, as this was something she always wanted to do. All in all, she did much better than she expected, enjoyed the trip (even with my crazy driving that strikes fear in NYC cabbies and drivers everywhere) and was happy she was able to take part in her yearly ritual. As was I.
Here we are, at the end of our ride through Central Park:

I am hoping she will be able to do her trip again next year at this time. I might even accompany her again, if she wants me to. She might not want me to slow her down.
Seriously.
She did.
