Best Friend - May She Rest Peacefully

Patches - ~1990-March 23, 2004
I am going to miss her. So will Mom, Jeff, and everyone who had the pleasure of having this spotted angel in their life and heart even for a few fleeting moments.
We adopted her from the local animal shelter. After a relatively short period of adjustment (for us as well as her) she integrated perfectly with our little family unit. Never was this dog happier that when she was with us. Countless times I would fall asleep on the floor for hours using her as a pillow. She also loved the priviledge of sleeping in the bed, for that made her feel like one of the family at the closest level.
Patches loved to take rides, especially in my truck. She probably knew that her dazzling white and black stood out perfectly in my red truck, and she made the day of the onlookers who would point and smile. Dalmatians seem to do that.
She had an uncanny knack for knowing when someone was troubled. She had a genuine look of concern in her eyes and a paw in your lap as if it were an offering of help. And a help it most often was. Unlike dogs that know many tricks, Patches' forte was comfort. She was "the feel-good dog".
She passed away on her own tonight, at 8:30pm. Her health had been failing in the last couple months, due to old age and a recurring huge cyst that would appear on her back. Her striking brown, contemplative eyes had dimmed with cataracts, but her feelings and compassion were always sharp. Today she had difficulty breathing and could no longer stand, but she seemed to wait until everyone in her family was around before she took her last breaths and was finally at peace. Tonight she joined her animal companions (Harry and Gorby, the two cats who died in earlier years but were every part her family) at the base of the oak tree in the back yard, under a starlit sky.
I love you Patches, and I will miss you dearly.
