Setting up a new computer with all the favorite software and programs is both a lot of fun and a hassle. One forgets all the customizations, installed utilities, add-ons and even major programs we all become comfortable with over time. Then there are software updates, service packs, potential incompatibilities and misplaced installation disks to contend with. Such are the hardships in the life of a h4rdc0re g33k such as I.

In the vein of extreme geekery, I had a pleasant surprise this afternoon. The case I ordered for the ultimatemegasuperhyperserver, scheduled to be delivered on the 4th, instead came in today. It suffered a slight bit of damage in shipping (a caved-in air intake grille on the rear panel) but is otherwise solid. I was able to straighten it out to look just as good as new with no problems. Thing is, I doubt I would have been able to exchange the case with Newegg, since after I made my purchase, it went to 'deactivated' status. I bought the last one. Go me.

The case is a work of art. And huge. A black monolith carved out of aluminum alloy with no plastic anywhere, I spotted Kodi sitting in front of it, staring at it after I had unpacked it. I half expect him to be able to use tools soon.

I cant wait to fill it with hardware. It already has 14 hard drives and a DVD burner all mounted up. Somebody help me.

DVI is a finicky beast. If the connection is not made, and the monitor is not actively looking at the DVI input, you wont get a picture. I hate that. Good old analog lets you unplug/replug, boot without a monitor, whatever, and still able to get a picture.

There are going to be two RAID arrays used for backing up everything here on a continuous basis. There are also several SCSI drives that will constitute the file/media serving end. I went overboard ten years ago building a server and it held up well over time. This one is actually more flexible and should stay decent for at least as long, or I hope so.

sigh. All these people buying computers...my desktop is on it's last legs but the laptop will have to do until the economy or my work situatiom changes - or people buy my shit on ebay when it goes up. Economic depression clearout time!

This one is replacing a machine that's been grinding away for ten years. Poor thing deserves a decent retirement. It's about time I bring things into the 21st century. I just wish I could keep ahead of all the failures and breakdowns. lol
