I finally am getting around to giving my new-and-improved LAN and server setup a few tests. This post is one success story. I am sitting at my PC as I usually do, but am operating it from the middle of nowhere about 140 miles away. From here I can do anything I can at home. I can check the status of my toner and ink levels right from each printer. I can change configurations of my ethernet switch. And I can see and work the desktops of every PC on the LAN. So, all the work I put into this mess for the last several months has been worth it. One dead drive notwithstanding.

There is enough redundant and recursive security measures that I hope will prevent any nastiness from occurring. So far, so good. But one never knows with Microsoft stuffs. ;)

So goes my minor geekgasm.

I had a few postings detailing how I lost data/work through hardware failure. The kicker here is that I had done about three weeks work of sorting and renaming music files and placing them in the hierarchy I had decided on. I temporarily took the server down as I redid the network and mounted the big gigabit switch and tidied up stuff. It was after I got the LAN running at high speed that I was going to make the next backup of the library. Wouldnt ya know, the drive containing ONLY the library crashed. I did not lose any files per se, but I lost the work of the organization I had done, which amounted to about 50-70gig of files.

Now I back up every time I make changes, and to multiple drives. And I can do so remotely now if I need to.
