Pixar does it again

Jeff and I just returned a while ago from seeing Pixar's Up in 3D at the AMC Columbia theaters. Once again, Pixar hits one out of the park. A wonderful, engaging flick that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. We were at the latest showing, nearly 10pm, yet there were quite a few very young children in attendance. Uh oh, potential for distracting racket..., but, not this time. Surprisingly, despite the number of people, during the 'serious' scenes, one could hear a pin drop in that theater. I was impressed. This shows just how focused the entire house was on the film. Bravo to you folks at Pixar, you made my day.

I keep expecting Pixar to make a bad film and I'm with you, UP is incredibly good. I really appreciated the nearly dialogue-free opening minutes, similar to Wall-E, which was yet another high watermark.

I didn't fare as well with the kids at the UP showing I attended. I don't quite understand why parents will let their offspring behave so badly in a public setting.

The opening scenes were wonderful. Not a word was needed, yet it was abundantly clear what was taking place. I am sure Pixar could do a classic 'silent' movie (and I hope they do) and it would do well. I can't explain it, but Pixar seems to have mastered visual storytelling in a way that nobody else has. Granted, much of what they do in that realm has been done in some form before, but they seem to have their own knack. Who knew that a huge server farm could render such deeply personal storytelling? It's true, though, what has always been with computers. But in this case, it's incredible in, incredible out.

Pixar does the extraordinary with the ordinary, and the commonplace with the unconventional. Perfect human interest stories with not a human in sight. And what I think is very telling is that if a 'family' is depicted, it's not your typical, overplayed perfect little American family. Single parent households, dysfunctional families, and if anything is meant to show the everyday and commonplace, the workaday world, etc, it's done with unusual characters. The closest they have come to the traditional nuclear family was The Incredibles, but they had their fair share of problems and issues, and it took adversity to bring them together.

I was pleased to see the 'limited' cast in this movie. It made it that much easier to concentrate on their personalities, dialog and how the artists and animators worked their magic.

I just like it when my honey and I can spend a nice evening out together. Not to mention when my honey gets shmoopy during certain parts of movies, he is SO CUTE :)

I really didn't care for it. I was told it was because I didn't watch it in 3D.

How was it in 3-D? I saw it in "2-D" and was perfectly satisfied.
What a wonderful film. I think the 3-D might be a little distracting.

The cool thing about the 3D in this case is that you were not beat over the head with it. No jumping out of the screen, no distractions. Instead, it gave the sense of depth and solidity, all the forms in 3D. The best way to describe it was most of the action stayed 'behind' the screen, yet had depth.

I cannot rave enough about the movie--a beautiful piece of work.
