John Hughes

John Hughes, director of memorable movies Sixteen Candles, Pretty In Pink, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Beuller's Day Off, National Lampoon's Vacation, Home Alone and many more, has died of a heart attack. He was only 59.

I found most of his movies to be pure entertainment, with honesty, heart and intelligence. He practically created his own genre of youth-oriented movies that had an appeal to a wider audience. How many people would utter the phrase "John Hughes movie"? I know I heard it often. He will be missed.

Beuller was more like the fantasy that so many teens wished they could pull off. All of Hughes' youth films treated the roles with maturity and honesty, and more to the point he used actors and actresses that were very believable in those roles. You felt you were getting a good deal for your time spent watching his movies by default.

Indeed, your assessment of Ferris is exactly how I feel about the film, I mean, the opening scenes where we see all the contraptions rigged to fool his hapless parents was a big giveaway.

The Breakfast club, indeed, you felt connected to these disparate students who end up learning something from each other after a day in detention.

But I never got into the Vacation franchise, Curly Sue or the Home alone franchise because just judging by the trailers, it was comedy for comedy's sake I felt, sad, really.
