A Michigan company has come up with a new punctuation mark. Unlike the well-known ones, this new punctuation is used to denote when the preceding sentence contains sarcasm.

"Statements have the period. Questions have the question mark. Exclamations have the exclamation mark. When you see the newest punctuation mark for sarcasm, you'll know the writer of that sentence doesn't literally mean what they're writing; they're being sarcastic," the company said in a release.

Best of all, the company is providing this new punctuation as an installable feature in hand-held devices and computers for a mere $1.99. It's a great day for the written word. It truly is!

Really!

Nothing yet on the "irony" punctuation mark?

They'd make more money if they came up with a "lets hook up" sign.

If that happened, you'd see it everywhere. Between every word.

Yup, think of the possibilities. On t-shirts, Starbucks cups, greeting cards, Barbie clothes, bank advertising, the possibilities are endless!

Like this, as an example?

"Hi, my name is Bruce"

It's like an @ sign that's gotten a bit unhinged.

I'm highly amused by the fact that someone thinks people will PAY for a punctuation mark.

Um... How weird is it that someone wants to charge for a punctuation mark...?

Date: 2010-01-13 08:22 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] eric-mathgeek.livejournal.com
They're not charging for the mark. They're charging for the feature that allows you to use it.

What a bargain! I think I will buy one!

Date: 2010-01-13 08:27 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] gryphons-hole.livejournal.com
I don't see the point of buying for the feature when I suspect a vast majority of folks will have no idea what that thingie at the end of my sentences is...

Then I will have to explain it to all of them and that just leaves me doing the work of advertising something after I had to pay for it. That pisses me off.

That's the genius of it. People will want to know what it is, and then they'll just *FLOCK* to it so they can be sarcastic too!

I think you need to learn to use it, because regular punctuation clearly just isn't enough for you.

Sarcasm just wouldn't be as fun if it were instantly announced to its recipient for what it is.

Umm...it looks like a dizzy sperm that kicked its tail off too soon?

Is it a $1.99 one time fee & "all the sarcasm you can eat" or do you have to pay them residuals each time you type something sarcastic? Do they offer a bulk rate? will they pro-rate the fees if you're only just slightly sarcastic? With each typed sarcastic comment do you get 3 free verbal sarcastic comments?

Damn, I wish I had known about this on Black Friday I would have stocked up.

Oooh...sarcasm gift cards!

I sure hope they have a sliding scale for those of us who just dabble in sarcasm, but not even enough to consider it a hobby.

WTF‽

I'd rather have wide acceptance and easy use of the interrobang... a much more useful punctuation symbol, IMNSHO.

I refuse to pay for a symbol for sarcasm!

I'm quite capable of being sarcastic on my own, for free!
