I took delivery today of a small, 7" diagonal portable digital television. It's so typically Chinese in nature, with a lot of features (ATSC and NTSC tuners, FM radio, analog video/audio inputs and outputs, along with USB and SD-card slot for playing music, movies and photos) but a rather dismal usability set due to funky menus and UI. The user manual is soaked in Engrish as well, always fun to read. But the absolute best thing about it is the tamper-evident label covering one of the screws on the back. You know, the ones that say "Warranty Void If Seal Is Broken" or similar text. Well, this one is pure Engrish gold:

tear it up

I so wish I could get sheets of these for all the test equipment I repair and calibrate for The Big Company That Makes The Cool Airplanes.

This might be worthy of a submission to http://engrish.com/
It would be fun if they featured it!

Oh, yeah, I'll just bet it passed QC. *eyeroll* As long as people keep buying crap like this, we'll keep getting buried in it.

So much of this stuff comes from factories on assembly lines next to something else being made with a familiar name. When these outfits decide to "go it alone" and manufacture goods for various markets, a lot of the translating becomes downright silly, but there's a lot of shared components and technology. Sadly, in many cases there are shortcuts, and some safety testing gets overlooked (not done at all). Being that the designs are often copped from contract manufacturing by leading names, this is not always going to result in meltdowns, bad smells and children feasting on lead-based coatings and componentry. It also means that you have things like Apple computers (Designed in California!) with burning power supplies and exploding battery packs.

As long as people keep wanting cheap above all else, and buy durable goods as they would pairs of shoes that fall out of fashion in a season, there will be, unfortunately, tons of this sorta thing filling up landfills.
