Jeff and I just got back from voting. I figured it would be less of a hassle to go now before the rest of the huddled masses come home from work, as the evenings tend to be much more crowded. About 15 minutes and we were both done. Only a handful of people there this time.

I miss the old mechanical voting machines. There was always something satisfying about that healthy ker-chunk when you pulled the big red lever. Touch screens just have no soul.

I never got to use one of the older style voting machines. Both Idaho and California were using punch cards (with the notorious potential for "hanging chads") by the time I was old enough to register and vote.

I miss the "Ker-Chunk!" sound too.. but, as long as I am voting, any sound it makes when I do so is good!

I miss the big lumbering voting machines too but as I came an adult, they were being phased out, now our state is pretty much all mail in these days so there is no audible sound to let you know it's done except fold, insert, lick security envelope, stick in mailing envelope, sign it, affix stamp and mail (of which I did dutifully today thankyouverymuch.

My earliest memories of the voting process were those machines with the levers and the big ker-chunk at Albert Einstein High School in Montgomery County.

Here in Wisconsin we connect two ends of an arrow with a black line, and slide the giant ballot into an electronic counter.

I’ve never seen one of those voting machines in real life, only on TV, and have no clue how they would even work. Since I was of voting age, we’ve always had the “fill in the spot” voting cards, kind of like a Scantron™ sheet only with black marker pens instead of #2 pencils.

Glad to hear you guys got out and voted!
I got on my crutches and clomped over to our polling place, armed with my cheat sheet.
Felt good to get off my butt and participate.
I just don't trust touchscreen voting machines. Too many shenanigans in 2000 and 04. Here in SF, they use paper ballots and scan them as they go into the ballot box. I feel better with a paper trail, in case the electronic tally is wonk.

Ain't it nice to do something normal?
