It's about time, Jeff and I got new cell phones. Jeff needed something for texting and email that has a real keyboard, I wanted a smartphone that also has a wifi hotspot built in that was also flexible. To that end he ended up with an LG Cosmos, I got a Motorola Droid X. I'm trying the ljbeetle app for this place. My question for y'all, what are your favorite Android apps? Let me know in your comments.

ooh with Jeff on the real keyboard thing, I have a HTC Desire Z.

Fave apps?

Scruff - closest thing to Grindr on Android AFAIK

ASTRO - File browser, v useful

Google Shopper & Barcode Scanner - amazing what info Google has on products/CDs and QR codes...you'll be wandering around the house or shop scanning things

Opera - sometimes the browser does not cut it

Connect4 well I love that game

Bubble Buster - Puzzle Bobble clone as Frozen Bubble but free

LAYAR - augmented reality on your phone. Big wow factor esp the Wiki layar.

gvSIG maps esp if you travel to areas that require more detail or Google doesn't know much about

various Tube/Public transport apps which won't apply to you unless you visit! London Journey is the best if you do.

AutoRun Killer - not sure about this one, as is the Ultimate Juice battery apps...yes they save battery life BUT they seem to switch off stuff as you want it - all of them. Best tweak all your updating/synch settings and display brightness to max out the battery life.

Google Goggles - not tried this yet, but very cool idea.

Google Sky Map - for the wow factor

Don't forget there are many hidden layers on Google Maps...like Wikipedia and transit which are really useful.

And doubt you have a Wordpress blog, but the app makes updating really useful...seems like most websites etc. have an app nowadays, worth checking.

The last one I use a LOT you can't get unless you do a crafty and setup your phone with an English VPN. Spotify app - and you have to be premium for that which I doubt you could do in the US...but if they ever launch or have in the US it's really worth a free trial or paying for a while, cos word on the street is there is no DRM so you can synch loads of tracks to your phone then keep them and play them in the app ;-)

Camera360 is AWESOME, so far my favorite. Task killer is another.

Got Camera360 per your suggestion, it's damn cool! I need to figure out which is a good task manager though, some got rather nasty reviews.

Advanced Task Killer is what I use, it works perfectly and never gives my Droid a problem.

Barcode reader and ShopSavvy. ShopSavvy in particular allows you to scan a product bar code and it'll then look up local prices and web prices. Handy to check if that large purchase really is to good to miss ...

I got that one, been trying it out on barcodes around the house. Does not always have some products. I want to try it at the store and see what I can find. Thanks!

Fellow Androider!!!

I have all of the above plus:
- Tweetdect to unify twitter, facebook and foursquare (if you catch this)
- Whatsapp is a must, to have free messaging to all your contact list
- Don't forget to keep your contacts in synchro with Gmail. This is better than expected.
- BIDI codes scanner
- Google reader for your RSS feeds (requires a google reader account)

I'm working my way through some of the suggestions. I've pulled back from other social media except for LJ, though it's not completely out of the question, so I might look into the tweetdeck/whatsapp things. I've tried a couple code scanners, that stuff is cool, though not always accurate.

A couple more tips: Keep an eye in some Android online communities such as Android community

Another vote for Scruff. I have it for iPhone, and I think it's better and friendlier than Grindr - and doubtless more geared toward the more masculine clientele with which we're fond.

I installed Scruff, but have yet to put my info in or try it out yet. Eventually I will.
