Holy Shit! Earthquake!!!

Ongoing edit: I'm watching the news, and it was a 5.9 magnitude temblor centered in Mineral, VA, near Richmond, at a depth of 3.5 miles, which is quite shallow. It was felt from New York to South Carolina!

I'm picking up a few things that fell during the 30+ seconds of shaking. No damage that I have found as of yet. Well, other than some shaken nerves. While there have been earthquakes here before (one being centered about 4 miles from here at one time), I've never experienced experienced something like this. I know, you California people are calling me an amateur, but this is completely new to me!

Kodi is still a bit, well, shaken. He's not relaxing just yet. Trying to call Jeff on the cell or the landline is futile, I imagine the lines are flooded.

I'm watching the news, and it appears it was centered in Mineral, near Richmond, Virginia and was felt from North Carolina to Connecticut! It was 5.8 magnitude at about 3.5 miles deep. I'm picking up stuff that fell down. It was at least 30 seconds of shaking here that kept building, then a serious shifting and bouncing. It faded away afterward. Scary!

Indeed! Preliminary estimated magnitude of 5.8, certainly nothing to sneeze at!

Yep, I'm watching the news now. You guys let one escape!

Well, apparently someone dropped it in Colorado yesterday on its way to you! :-)

Since revised to 5.9 and at a depth of only 1 km!

I won't call you an amateur, since I don't recall you ever making snarky comments about quakes out here. I just can't stand people who live in places that get tornadoes or hurricanes giving grief to Californians because we get quakes.

I'm glad you didn't have any physical damage; have a cup of tea (or whatever works for you) and relax. ;)

Having lived in SF, LA, & OC counties as well as Tornado Alley, I give grief about neither.

One thing I never do is snark on folks who have endured major disasters. Cali has had their fair share of nasty earthquakes, and they tend to all be notable, at least. What I will snark on is people who have something minor and think it's the end of the world. MD is full of people who can't handle an inch of snowfall. People panic, buy out the stores supplies of milk, bread and toilet paper, and make the roads into parking lots. Needless to say, the last couple winters here with several feet of snowfall separated the men from the infants. It was actually easier to get around in the bad stuff because all the fearful amateurs finally stayed home where they could not cause problems.

Once I ascertained the (lack of) damage, I could look back on it as being kinda cool. In fact, this is one of those "teachable moments" that allowed people who have never experienced an earthquake and could not fathom what they are like to see what one could do. Granted, it was relatively minor, but there was enough widespread damage and a huge participating audience in the Eastern seaboard. Now they know.

I wonder if fracking had anything to do with it.

Nope probably not. Those shale formations are in far western Virginia, along the border.

Fracking is being blamed for recent small quakes in the DFW area.

Small earthquakes are linked to the weight of the Burj Dubai exerting "pinpoint" pressure on the earth's crust. There is already a huge engineering challenge to design buildings to withstand earthquakes. But what if they cause them? lol

I usually don't pay attention to anything less than 6 ;) But yeah, that's pretty decent size for you folks. Glad all seems to be a-ok for ya.

At least the Mississippi didn't start running backwards as it did during the Big One in 1812.

I wouldn't know, I wasn't there at the time. ;)

True, that did not happen, but I did see a viewer-submitted video on the TV news coverage that showed their in-ground pool sloshing side to side, throwing water over the edge.

Holy shit is right! I was standing in the kitchen by the sink and the cups hanging in the window started swinging. The floor was moving, and I knew it wasn't just an attack of vertigo. "Richard, look!" He pointed out that the cups hanging across the room were swinging as well.

His explanation was that they're doing construction across the street and he sometimes feels tremors from it. Oh, no…a few minutes later on the news he heard that there had been this gigantic quake. I had known for some time it was New York's turn; thankfully, no dishes or anything from the shelves were broken…this time.

Glad you're all right, because you're really close to it.

It was quite a ride. When I noticed to display and PC on the desk here shaking, I thought it was Kodi leaning against the desk while scratching himself like he is wont to do. No, he was in the other room and soon began barking. Then it started getting stronger, various stuff rattling and clinking. It started to ease, and I thought it was over. Then the big wave hit, knocking stuff down. I was looking across the house and outside the window and I could see the house moving in relation to the house about 500 feet in the back yard. I went into the living room and braced the cabinets against the wall that have all the trinkets and such. it faded away and I started "damage control" which there was none. It was kinda cool!

I'm still in Michigan, visiting Tom - my mom called to tell me about the quake - she is ok, my cat is too - hope my toys (action figures) on my bookcases are ok, will find out later....

It's scary. I'm glad you're fine and that there was not a lot of damage connected to the earthquake.

HUGS!

Hey, an earthquake is scary, nuff said! Yeah, those CA guys may call you an amateur, but I have only felt one and it had my Gay nerves all frazzled. It was in June of 87 when a 5.0 hit Illinois. My late partner Craig and I lived in a 4-story building that really shook for as small of a quake it was. That was more than enough for me!

Getting upset at anything ≤ 4.0 is amateur.

~6.0 is pretty respectable.

Check basement, foundation, and walls for cracks.

Glad you had no serious damage
