Best, to-the-point analogy that depicts where the users of Facebook (and most other social media setups for that matter, even LJ) rank in the grand scheme of things:

In other news, I am sick of the cold, wet and dreary weather that has befallen Mayhem Acres in the last few weeks. While I have been making the best of it by doing inside stuff (a major cleaning, painting and upgrading of one bedroom took place this last week and weekends), it does not do much for my well being. Said extreme bedroom makeover was extended in duration by almost double simply because I was not able to move like I would normally. I still have a whole list of chores, fixes and duties to perform in and around the house and garage before winter sets in, and some things are just not doable in the rain. Jeff and I will make the best of things, I guess. It's hell when no one is around to help, or has excuses not to.

Sadly, I think a lot of people won't get it.

Deleted my account yesterday. Not that I used it that often. But certain friends are already dismayed. I'll stick with LJ as long as it lasts but will not be taking up any new social media at all. Haven't allowed anything to be linked to anything else. Perfectly happy to approach my latter years with less rather than more questionable contact.

LJ is the only social media I ever used to meet new people online. I use Facebook to communicate with friends I have had in real life both past & present.I don't friend anyone or accept being friended by strangers over there so even though we are the product some of us are using them for our own purposes . I never did get that whole friending people thing. It's very strange to me when I see some clown with 4000 friends. As you grow older you have to slow down man.Get used to it . focus on less at one time and take more time for yourself. The stuff still gets done and what doesn't get done can be done later or by someone else when you're gone. Screw it,we weren't born to be enslaved by material possessions and appearances don't really matter. In the end we all end up in a hole in the ground so none of this is real and permanent anyway and what others think is totally meaningless.Be happy and go out and enjoy your life.

My concern is the new tracking technology. I don't like that certain sites that I visit will be recorded even if I am logged out of Facebook. I also don't like the option for those sites to show up on a timeline. The hidden technology has leapt from potentially invasive to absolutely so. It'll always get worse. Also hate that it fucks up google searches, customising what comes up for you. Just one big nuisance.
I take a lot of time for myself. I'm early retired, I have a whole handful of projects on the go. I enjoy my life. It's a good one and I work to make it so because it got this way because Myles gave me the freedom to work it like that when he died.
I'm a lucky SOB.

Phil, you just have to get used to your new limitations. I know how it is, and you know where I'm coming from.

I've offered to help out; you know how to get in touch with me.
