Today's Google Doodle in honor of Alan Turing has been keeping me from doing more important stuff around the house. Anyone with an interest in the earliest computational devices (or puzzle fans for that matter) needs to spend some time trying to figure it out. Highly addicting!

What's also interesting is the BBC is reporting that a modern-day inquest would find a ruling of his alleged suicide as "insupportable"... Which is what I suspect as well.

You can read it here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-18561092

Welcome to the procrastination club.

Been doing that more than actually doing ANYTHING truly constructive.

although tonight I did get my desk largely cleared and the dishes done.

Dang! ...it's already the 24th officially so I missed it. Back in the 1980's I recall seeing on Broadway a stunning British import, a play titled "Breaking the Code" which was a somewhat dreamlike/flashback account of Alan Turing's story, starring Derek Jacobi. The actor had to replicate Turing's stutter, turning in a remarkable and touching performance.
Now I'll have to go read the link provided by [livejournal.com profile] barak.

And besides, its Alan Turing! What self-respecting geek could resist?

I missed that too - but loved the Turing posts and had to post on Radio Clash about him. Much respect.

But kind of sad so few of the posts mentioned he's still on the books as a sex offender - the 'gross indecency' charge still stands for being gay. I really think that should be pardoned, despite what the government says about it (they refused after a MASSIVE petition for it).

He is the man who invented the computer (well large parts of the theory to go towards it, and Ace which apparently my Dad is helping renovate), and also a pretty good candidate for why I'm not speaking German now since the codebreaking did help win the war - so shame he gets rewarded with a stain on his character like that over something that now isn't criminal and should never have been criminal.
