Radioactiveman!
Aug. 3rd, 2004 07:17 pmWell, I have just been released from the hospital a few hours ago. Another apparent heart attack that wasnt, but with no conclusive proof what it actually was. I could not breathe, I had sharp pains in my chest and my right arm, dizziness and nausea. This came around Sunday night to the point where I asked mom to take me to the ER. I had another stress test done, among nuclear inmaging, ultrasounds, EKGs, the whole bit. I still have tightness in my chest, but I feel like a total idiot for going through all of this with it being a false alarm. I guess better safe than sorry.
A little while ago, I took out my trusty little Geiger counter (what self-respecting total geek does not have one?) and pointed it at myself. I am very radioactive!
The goggles, they do nothing!

Date: 2004-08-03 05:58 pm (UTC)i just finished posting a comment to another friend's journal about panic attacks. about 8 years ago i went through a series of episodes that were very similar to what you describe. on a couple of those occasions i went to the emergency room because i was convinced it was a heart attack.
after a lot of doctor visits and a whole lot of tests (EKG, 24-hour EKG, stress test, CAT scan), it was finally diagnosed as a panic disorder. they put me on SSRI anti-depressants, and the problem went away.
i was on and off the meds for a few years -- i didn't like taking them, but i knew they helped. eventually i stopped and was fine for a couple years. then the problem came back with a vengeance. once again, a simple prescription made all the difference.
it's definitely good to get all the available tests and make sure there isn't a cause. if all those tests repeatedly come back negative, then it's worth investigating the possibility of a panic diagnosis.
note that a panic attack doesn't mean you are panicking about something in particular -- if you tell people you've had a panic attack they often ask "what were you panicking about?" it usually doesn't work that way...although there may be a pattern to location and situation, the panic attack is more often the result of a generalized anxiety which may be caused or exacerbated by a chemical imbalance.
i hope you're able to find some sort of answer soon and put these unpleasant episodes behind yoU!
