More of the side of that hill
Aug. 10th, 2004 02:47 pmThis weekend was Hillside Illuminations weekend. We were not able to get our own site for this weekend (it booked up the first day of registration; I finally got through on the third day) so we stayed on a site with some of Jeff's friends from PA along with three other guys. No trailer, it was back to the tent for us. I decided to see if we could cram everything into the Mini for the weekend, and did so. It was fun. We found some of our buddies that seem to always be there for Illuminations from Roch'ter (
buffalobear will remember them as 'The Muffins') and spent a lot of time hanging out with them as well as our friends from Jersey across the street. Unlike most theme weekends at Hillside, people seem to concentrate more on socializing and creativity than outright partying. It was damn cold (low 40s!) during the evenings, so that had a bit to do with it too.
Then there was the actual Illuminations evening. This never ceases to amaze me. The creativity of so many gay men piled together in one spot can be overwhelming. Everything from humorous displays to solemn memorials to interactive sites with themes abounding. I tell everyone (well, at least the gay ones) that they need to see this at least once in their lives. If there is one candle lit there has to be a half million. Photos dont really do it justice (though I try and take lots), you just have to be there.
There will be just one more weekend for us at the end of the month (the third and final bear weekend) and that wraps up our summer of camping at Hillside. It's always fun, even if the weather doesnt cooperate at times.
