Leonard Nimoy, actor who played Mr Spock on Star Trek, dies aged 83.

“Of my friend, I can only say this: of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most… human.”

You might be gone, but your influence on so many, especially in science and space exploration, will live long and prosper.

I'm really broken up about this.

The loss of some people affects us a lot more than others. I always had the impression that Leonard Nimoy actually embodied the quote you have included here.

He actually was. He worked tirelessly advocating for science and research, and in recent years became a fierce advocate for gay marriage and rights. Out of his Spock character he was a true mensch, and he played a character that was supposed to be entirely devoid of emotion and affection, but came across as the voice of reason, and with lots of compassion.

Yeah, I'm still not over it. I keep reading tributes and stories during the day, and I get all flubbered up again.

And LTNS! Hope all is well.

Few people as actors I could truly consider a hero and a big influence. Nimoy is a big exception.

Makes me with that Genesis Planet was a real place.

I had the opportunity to see the original Star Trek in real time. Nimoy's Spock completely held his own against Shatner's over-the-top Kirk becoming an iconic character. I think Spock was the poster child for the reserved of us who held back emotions to ourselves.

Nimoy did much in his life although it was always overshadowed by the pointy eared alien. We were fortunate to have him.

Spock meant a lot to the outcasts, the loners, the geeks and the awkward types like me. He was the perfect, unflappable straight man who had a propensity to sneak in his own jabs when people had no idea they were coming. In every geek, there's a bit of Spock, and will be for a very long time.

Indeed Nimoy did a lot of things in life beyond Trek. I remember fondly the "In Search Of..." series, and his unmistakeable voice that would pop up in narrations. I'm gonna miss him.

I'm sure there were a few tears shed in all over NASA and other space exploration outfits the world over.
