I've been reading with some interest about the release of the new Apple Mac Mini and other goodies. I've also been tracking the progress of a couple LJ posts/threads spawned from these new releases.

Talk about your howling and gnashing of teeth!

The PC/Mac battle has been going on for as long as both platforms existed, and there's no sense in me revisiting that, we all know the drill. For the record, I am a PC guy. Why? Mostly because I have always built my own computers. I've used Macs throughout the years and I still find them to be great systems which only got better with the release OSX. Still, Let me cobble together my own crazy PC, with a terabyte of hard drives, RAID, water cooling, etc. I'm a hardware guy, and tinkering makes me happy. Getting the software to play nice is another story though.

I also have an iPod. Still to me the best music player in terms of design useability and interface. There are cheaper ones, but this one still got it all right.

Apple to me embodies the 'out of the box experience' more than most other companies. You pay for this, however. I believe when you buy an Apple product, you are buying a premium piece. This is also to mean that you will find cheaper alternatives, but not necessarily the 'total package' in many cases. Kudos to them for coming out with the Mac Mini. It's not a new idea, nor is it state of the art in terms of features or performance. It does bring Apple's sleek industrial design to the form factor. Who knows, I might get one simply to be able to work both sides of the fence from the same console. It's only a KVM switch away.

Good Lord we are so much alike. I was going to post something exactly like what you just said. I'm a pc guy myself because I'm also a hardware geek who loves to build and play. My exact thought tonight was that I might just buy a mini and a KVM switch just to play around a bit on both sides of the fence...

Marry me?

I use a PC at work and an iMac at home.
I lean more toward the Mac, tho I know my way around PC's fairly well.
If PC's weren't so ugly....
Macs have it down in the design department.

I'm pretty neutral on the whole thing...just like to share info. :)

I am pretty neutral on this, I could care less what anyone else uses really. Myself I am a PC guy, I was trained on PC's since 1988, plus working in Real Estate, there are NO programs for Mac, period. Since alot of my work is done at home, a Mac would be useless for me.

I've used both platforms, too. Back in the time when both Windows and Macs were shit compared to the Amiga, I struggled to adapt to the odd mindset of either company, since I was working on game ports for all those platforms.
Lotsa PC users like their units 'cause they can tinker with them.
I can build a system nearly as well as most any geek-- to anyone who's torn down and rebuilt an engine, building a computer is like playing with Legos--but that's not where I find the fun.
I like Macs 'cause they do what I need to do well--graphics, sound and video. No fuss, no futzting. If I want to tinker, there's a motorcycle in the garage ;)

The proprietary crap that Apple pulls (for instance, the recent spate of iPod compatibility problems) means that I will never be buying a PC or any product made by said company. I don't like being forced to use what they give me. *shrug*

I have kept my iPod 'disconnected' from all that by keeping the Music Match software that came with it as well as using Ephpod. I dont like the things they pulled either, but it was mostly due to trying to keep the iTunes music locked up against those people trying to free up (decrypt) the tunes. I dont use iTunes, so it's not a problem for me.
