About three inches of snow fell this afternoon. I quickly dispatched it from the driveways with the snowblower then headed out to pick Jeff up from what was supposed to be a partial day for him at work. What I find no longer suprises me, but infuriates me now to no end. People packing the roads not knowing how to drive. Frozen in fear and filled with cellphone blathering idiocy they make every imaginable stoopid move on the roads. I truly hate being on the roads in the snow nowadays, where it used to be a source of enjoyment for me. It seems that everyone just has to be somewhere with their self-important selves instead of staying home or waiting it out.

It's much easier when over a foot of snow falls. Then it keeps most people home. I am in my element then.

I remember driving to DC from MA 25 years ago when it started snowing in MD. The thing that amazed me was people careening off highway exit ramps because they were too stupid to slow down for the ramps... whee... car pinball...

It wasn't any better this morning. It should have been an easy commute with most (if not all) of the Feds off for the Inauguration, but no, people were acting as if they had not a brain in their heads. There were two extremes: the people who decided that they only safe way to drive on the Beltway was doing 20 MPH and the people who decided that they were pissed off at the 20 MPH people and drove 90 MPH whisking around them, darting in and out. I was waiting for one of them to slide right off the road. Dorks.

We got about four inches here in Charleston, West Virginia, last night. Enough to make things pretty messy. But every branch of every tree is coated in white. It's very pretty. And if you have a spouse or boyfriend, can you think of too many things more romantic than going for a walk together after dark when snow is falling thick and silent? You both have your hats and gloves and scarves, and you can mingle your foggy breaths in the air together and whisper romantic things to each other?

Just started broadcasting the second hour of "Weekend Edition." At 10:00am we run "Car Talk." Working at West Virginia Public Radio (as I always do on Saturday morning) is always interesting when there is severe weather on the way. I've got the studio TV monitor on the Weather Channel, and keeping an eye on the Associated Press wire.

Here's the weather advisory I typed up earlier this morning: "A heavy snow warning is in effect through Sunday for the mountains and the ski areas to the east. A winter weather advisory elsewhere. Total snow accumlations by Sunday afternoon will range from an inch or two in the Ohio River valley to as much as 6-12 inches in the mountains."

I love it. I love snow. I find cold weather exhilarating.
