greatbear John DeLorean dies at age 80 from complications that resulted from an earlier stroke. Definitely one of the more visionary, if not a bit stranger of the 'car guys', his first claim to fame was dropping a big V-8 into a Pontiac Tempest in '64, creating the Pontiac GTO and, some say, starting the 'musclecar' era of midsized and compact high performance cars. Till then, most of the high horsepower cars were fullsized. This year, ironically, the GTO has been reintroduced, albeit as a derivative of an Australian GM platform. Strange how things work out sometimes.
Most people are more familiar with the car he designed later on bearing his name in '85, the unforgettable DeLorean DMC-12, the car which really 'made' the Back To The Future series of movies.
Oh, the irony if he would have died at age 88...
