Sometime in the last few days, I noticed that my bandwidth seemed noticeably increased. I've had a 4Mbps download with a paltry 384kbps upload for a long time through Comcast. It's been mostly adequate, with the download being more than sufficient, but seriously lacking in upload speeds. So I ran a speed test. I just wondered what I did to deserve this:

I think someone goofed. Not that I'm complaining, mind you. I had been considering calling up Comcast to see what they'd do in the way of service enhancements, being that Verizon FiOS went in a couple years ago and I was considering switching over. This very well could be in response. Or possible just a test. We'll see.

Thanks for the responses to my photo hosting test. It seems that a few of you had slight issues seeing both pictures. In those cases, it seemed related less than if it were a hosting issue and more like it might have been a function of the viewing style or LJ page structure. It also seems that the Comcast flakiness since the last time I had pictures in my LJ is nowhere near as widespread as it was. Strange, but hopeful I think.

Now, a couple of you pointed out differences in the two pictures. I was not expecting this. On my screen, it seems that the Flickr-hosted pic is darker. The file hosted on Comcast is unaltered from what I have on my own hard drive. Flickr does apply some conversions in size of displayed photos, but in this case, I am displaying it in it's native resolution. Only thing I can think of is that some variations must get applied once the file is uploaded, possibly including web color space or gamut rules. Those more familiar with such matters probably know more of this than I do, or I might just be babbling outta my butt. Any insights?

Thanks again!

So, Comcast has done a Comcastic thing and increased my webspace from a measly 25MB to a whopping 1GB for each account I have. They also did a craptastic thing during the upgrade process that requires cookies to be placed on those PCs that retrieve data from those servers, even during remote loading. In other words, since I use that server space to host files that I use as part of my journal entries, if those reading my LJ have configured their PCs to reject 'third party' cookies, they cannot retrieve the files. This tossed a monkey wrench into my posting methods. Some have complained about my 'photo posts' being devoid of pictures. So, I am left with a dilemma as to how to go about finding reliable server space. My first choice of using my own domain is unworkable till I set up hosting. Using my home server is a possibility, but it's rickety, old and I did not want it to be subjected to constant spidering by web robots and search engines. LJ has space available, but it's soley for pictures, and the auto thumbnailing wrecks attempts at page layout. So, I dusted off my old Flickr account in the meantime and will give that a try.

To that end, here is a test. Same picture, different hosting. First is off of Flickr, the second from Comcrap. This is to check if the Comcast Cookie Conundrum is still in effect. Also, since some workplaces restrict site such as Flickr, there is a chance that hosting will be thwarted too. If I may impose a bit on my readership, can those who have gotten this far into my post tell me if they can see both photos?

I have a big bunch of photos to include in upcoming posts, and I dont want it to be an exercise in frustration. The latter has been one of the big reasons for my apathy in posting.

Thanks in advance!

I was hoping my weekend away from the intarweb would have given Comcast a chance to fix my intermittent connection. Two modems and a few calls later, it's still flaky at best. It's my guess that someone's connected equipment is splattering RFI in the particular band used for the modem communications, and this noise happens to not be anywhere around while the techs are trying to sort things out. Oh well, they'll get it, sooner or later. In the meantime Verizon is about to start digging up the neighborhood for the new FiOS fiber-to-the-premises do-everything service. Not sure if this will be in the cards for me in the future (it's possible though, since higher bandwidth is available for less than I am currently paying). With my luck, though, my cable will end up getting cut by the digging and laying of the fiber. I'm to the point of getting both cable and fiber for redundancy.

Good weekend playing gay uncle with the kids up in PA. Poor little pico-pooch Bear is glad to be away from the constant 'attention' given him by the little house-apes. Cool double-score of the weekend was coming across free firewood in the form of a tree that had fallen across the road which was cut up and bucked into woodstove-sized logs and left in the ditch/shoulder. That find will have to be tossed off the truck after I post this.

I'm going to be busy this coming week, and with the expected lame connectivity, I doubt I will be able to keep up with LJ posting from friends much less do anything in the way of my own entries. Consider this a hiatus. I'll be in NYC on Feb 5,6 and 7, but being that this is during the week, I doubt if anyone in and around the city would be up to doing anything. I could be wrong (as usual), so if this is the case, let me know. I'd love to see y'all.

Gonna hit the 'Update' button now. Wish me luck.

Wouldnt you know it. The 'net decided to work when I finally have the teck over to check out my cable issues. I could scream, but I predicted it would be like this. A silver lining though, it seems I was not the only one with issues, and all of us were on the same node. Comcast will be dispatching techs to check out the infrastructure to see what the problem is. In the meantime, things seem to be working okay. I'm not holding my breath that it will stay as such though.
