What am I happy about today? That the meme is over. What are you happy about? Probably that you wont have this cluttering up your friends list view any more.

But it was sorta fun.

I have another reason to be happy, that tomorrow is my last day in the grind until Jan The Fifth. I really, really need this break, and I hope to put it to good use.

Nothing too specific on the happy front, I finished up the garage door opener installation and programmed everything, fixed up the alarm system and installed the battery I had sitting around for ages. I will be able to install the second opener a lot faster knowing all the little details and changes I had to make. Jeff encountered icy roads on the way to work early this morning and ended up slammed sideways into a muddy embankment; a cursory check of his truck found no obvious damage or weird alignment issues, so that makes us both happy, especially since he did not get hurt.

Some computer happiness now that I finally got around to fabbing up a power harness for the last batch of drives in the megaserver, so now all the drives are functioning either as arrays or standalones. I also tweaked settings to get the external SATA stuff running in hotswap modes. I now have just about available connection method available save for Fibre Channel and Infiniband. I am not about to go that overboard. Just a healthy dosage of geek-happy.

And to make the rest of you happy, I have only one more of these posts to make.

More from the Garage of Happy: Picking Kodi up from the groomer. He looks awesome and smells nice and clean. He's really missing Jeff though, barking and mumbling while looking outside at the empty spot on the driveway. He wants Jeff to see how utterly fierce he looks.

I can now go back down to the garage and continue my tinkering there. The alarm system gets a new battery, the old battery was shot, and just recently totally came apart at one of the terminals. No more looking at the flashing battery warning. I also am going to work my tech-fu on the new door opener to try and allow other controls aside from the multifunction wall controller to interface with it and not throw the wall control into kernel panic every time the other control activates the opener.

It's Friday! It's part of that generally accepted universal happy. Unless you work in retail around this time of year, or your name is Jeff, who has to work tomorrow.

I am not off the hook either for tomorrow, it'll be a busy day for me. I take Kodi in for grooming, have to take care of business at the credit union, have some garage work to do, and I have to go back and help my friend with his house renovations. More electrical work, plus some carpentry/trim and upgrades.

I sure hope all the help I've been giving to everyone else will eventually come back to me in the form of reciprocity. I mean, I got a ton of stuff to do here and I really could use some help. However, it has never really been much in coming. I guess I have to be comfortable in the idea that the gift is in the giving, which, honestly, works for me.

No earth shattering happy episodes today, just some minor successes at work, a dinner of soup and sandwiches tonight and an unintentional nap. But it's happiness in it's own form.

New of the loss of Majel Barrett Roddenberry did temper any of today's happiness though. Her presence through the Star Trek universe was solid, fun and important. More than just Gene Roddenberry's wife, I think her voice as the Enterprise computers through the years defined her role in the series and in real life. Her role as the doting, meddlesome and flirty Lwaxana Troi was more than just comic relief, it had some powerful moments as well. My best memory was in the TNG "Half a Life", where Lwaxana falls in love with a scientist (played by David Ogden Stiers) working to revive their planet's dying sun. The twist here is that the scientist is soon approaching an age where those on his planet practice a form of ritual suicide they term the "Resolution". As with many Trek episodes, stories of the human condition take place, this time about aging, taking care of the infirm, and right-to-life issues taking center stage. Majel's acting abilities shine here as the fate of an entire planet stands uncertain. She will be missed. Yet, somehow fitting, she managed to complete her role once again as the voice of the Enterprise computer, and as such, the heart of the ship, in the upcoming movie. Mrs. Roddenberry died of leukemia.

Thank you, Majel, for all those moments, both happy and sad.

I almost forgot! For my entry into the day days of happy, I will go with falling asleep near the fire while it's cold and wet outside. Hard to beat the cozy feeling. However, draping my aging six-foot frame across a five foot wide love seat makes for some creaky, binding joints. The overall feeling, though, is happy.
