Boston

I've been watching the events unfold in the city of Boston. The initial "disbelief" of sorts that tried to tell me it's some sort of terrible accident. The realization that it was indeed intentional. The horrible carnage. The once again shattering of relative peace and security. And the utter cowardice of the group or individual responsible. I feel a rising rage, a helplessness for the injured, and a steely resolve to not let it happen anywhere near me. I hate humanity for what it is capable of. I lose faith and respect for people and weep for our future.

But as some time passes, and I begin to see video and hear accounts of what transpired the moment after the blasts, I see things that begin to crack the shield of anger and disgust I had immediately built around myself. I see amazing, selfless acts. I see incredible courage in ordinary people. I am reminded once again that during those times of tragedy and terror, in the face of extreme danger, I see the unstoppable good in so many people. Before the smoke had even cleared, as people were running from the blast sites, I began to see far more people running to the scene, tearing down barricades, tossing aside debris and doing whatever else they can to reach the injured. These selfless individuals weren't thinking of themselves or the possibility there could be another explosion. These folks charged directly into the face of danger to assist their fellow human beings. Stories of medical personnel on hand to see to the marathoners rushed to the scene to help. Wheelchairs and medical gear were on hand. The same marathoners kept running, running to donate blood or offer other assistance. Emergency personnel working diligently to secure the scenes and prevent more injuries. All of this in the span of minutes.

Indeed there are terrible people in this world, and our focus seems to settle on them way too often. We seem to forget, or somehow don't see, those selfless acts that happen every moment of every day. And when some major tragedy befalls us, the true heroes come out in force. A force much bigger than the ugly side of humanity. My heart goes out to those people affected by this tragedy, and my highest respect to those who gave of themselves to help others.

Apparently the Toronto and Ottawa areas have just recently experienced a 5.5 magnitude earthquake!

So, if Canada experiences an earthquake, does it make it an "earthquehke?" ;)

It's a happenstance such as this which almost leads me to believe not only 1) there is a God of some sort, but also 2) S/He and I would get along like a pair of timeworn drinking buddies.

Lightning strikes and destroys a 62ft. tall statue of Jesus.

This six-story tall sculpture, often called "Touchdown Jesus" because the upstretched arms resemble a football ref's touchdown call, sat in front of of the Solid Rock Church in Monroe, Ohio. People who know me well enough know that I find such blatant displays of in-your-face religious fervor disgusting. So I shed nothing more than a minor chuckle upon hearing of the delightfully appropriate destruction of this monstrosity. Not only that, but it seems that the construction of the statue, made of plastic foam and fiberglass over a minor framework of steel (you can see this in the aftermath in the picture above), is not much more substantial that the cheesy dashboard Jeezies you'd find at a touristy rest area alongside a rural highway. Ironic for a church calling itself Solid Rock they did not bother making their sculpture from traditional, more substantial material such as marble, stone or concrete.

Then again, you'd miss out on the spectacular demise.

The Virgin Birth. Also known mistakenly as the Immaculate Conception. It's real, people. And just perfectly timed for birth at Christmas. Some say Jim Morrison was God. I present to you the Real Lizard King. Er, make that Queen.

Speaking of Jesuses (Jesi?), here is a town having a barrel of fun with 'em, much to the scornful regret of people too serious for their own skin.

Speaking of automatons, the U.K. is already considering the future, specifically of robot rights. You'd see that happen here in the U.S., o' course. But only for the white, xtian robots.

Speaking of robots...

Via AmericaBlog: Bill Maher 'outs' Republican Party Chairman Ken Mehlman as gay, on Larry King...

Can it get any stranger? I mean, I am practically giddy over the news that George Macacawitz Allen might finally give into the notion that he got pwned, Rummy cuts and runs resigns, the House and Senate are bathed in a cool blue light and all, but I have a feeling the stranger, juicier and crazier news has just begun. What next? Osama Bin Laden living in luxury at Camp David? Karl Rove is a transsexual? James Dobson is the head of NAMBLA? WTF?

EDIT: It seems CNN has censored the original video, and forced YouTube to have all copies of the original videos removed. The original video remains on crooksandliars.com for now.

Priceless I tell ya... priceless. And keeps getting better.
