Olympian undertakings
Aug. 9th, 2008 12:27 amGiven the highly charged political state of the world in so many places, and the inevitable commercial push behind the Games themselves, it all takes a back seat when it comes to the actual event. Case in point: the Opening Ceremonies tonight. At every Games, it just keeps getting better and better. I knew China would put on a spectacular ceremony, but I did not expect it to be at that level. An incredible show of both traditional choreography and insanely high technology. It has raised the bar yet again.
Watching the grand parade of athletes making their entrances and being cheered on by the crowds, it seems to distill the Games down to what it's all about - the friendly competition between nations via sport. If it could only continue once the spectacle has ended.
It will be fun to tune in and follow many of the events. It'll be rough to tune out the endless sponsorships and advertising. Gotta take the good with the bad.
Let's hope the spirit of friendly competition continues.
Last, but not least, as I always have during the Olympic games, I let Mr. Otto show y'all how it's done:
