greatbear: (born to drive)
Rally car driver Ken Block is back with "GYMKHANA 4", his latest crazy-assed showcase of unbelievable driving skill, humor and destruction of tires. This time around, it's a full-on Hollywood-style production, the only thing not done with special effects is the driving. Maximize the frame, crank up the sound, and enjoy this hoon-fest.

This is the resulting visual upgrade to the rolling stock on my '00 Stratus. Gone are the 15x6 original rims shod with Michelin MX 195/65R-15 tires that admittedly had a ton of tread left at 30k. Problem is, at six-and-a-half years had taken their toll on the rubber, leaving spidery cracks everywhere and making them harder than hockey pucks. The slightest spirited driving in turns resulted in an operatic production of squeals and screeching. Worse still was the performance on wet roads, making it seem that the street was covered in televangelist hair oil. After having a tire of similar age on my truck blow apart and nearly send me off the road at highway speeds, I was not about to let old tires cause me grief again.

Being that I use the internets for just about everything, I turned to my faithful Tire Rack and ordered up a set of Kazera KZ-V 17x7 rims in silver with machined lip wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position XL 215/45WR-17 directional tires. The difference is like night and day. Tight ride, improved road feel and incredible performance in wet and dry conditions. Already I have had various sports coupes and sedans surprised going through my trio of roundabouts on the way to and from home here. And on the way home tonight the new, nimble handling and sharp response got me out of a potential scrap on I-95 from someone not watching what they were doing and cutting off traffic in front of me and sending everyone into other lanes.

As usual, such upgrades are not without the seemingly never ending chain of complimentary upgrades. The car would look better lowered a bit, and the handling would be made a bit more balanced with a beefier rear sway bar and some poly bushings. That will probably happen in the future after I take care of other automotive and non-auto projects.

In related news, the replacement rims for the Mini that were damaged when I was run off the road are due in a couple weeks. I'll be glad to get that project taken care of as well. While I think nothing of working on other's rides, I still relish the satisfaction of keeping my own 'fleet' (and all told, I have five cars and a truck) operational.

Shoes!

The truck got it's new shoes tires today. B.F. Goodrich All Terrain T/A KO, 33-12.50 16.5 Load Range D. Same as I have been getting for years. They last a long time, great traction regardless of conditions, and relatively quiet during the first half of threadwear or so. The blowout notwithstanding, I have never had any issues with these tires. Had an appointment at 6 pm to get them mounted, and turning the key in the ignition got me absolutely nothing. Despite the fact I installed a huge Optima deep cycle battery in it a couple months ago, having the truck sit totally unused since the blowout with the power inverter switched on (I use this to run a refrigerator during travel time. 4 cubic feet of refrigerated goodness. Ice cream even!) meant it was beyond dead. Two booster packs and a 100 amp charger later, I was on my way. One task of many taken care of. And I am a bit over eight hunnert bux poorer for my efforts.

Speaking of living in the poorhouse, I should be getting my new camera soon. Having missed the use of my SLR for so many years, I waited until the digital versions kept getting better and cheaper. I settled on a Canon EOS 30D body and a Canon EF 17-55mm f4.0 lens to start with. If (my) history is any indication, I should budget for a couple more lenses, a flash, and lots of accessories and trinkets. Camera shy friends of mine, beware.

I have been dealing almost daily with various issues and tasks, big and small, with the aftermath of Mom's death. Medical bills, estate stuff, legal nonsense, etc. It's a lot for one person to deal with who has never been through it before, but I (think I) am managing okay so far. Common sense is the key here, as well as looking for information beforehand. Still, I anticipate future issues and drama for years to come. Wrote my (ex?) father a while back telling him of the news and stopping the alimony checks. I got no reply, nor was I anticipating one, really. Would have been nice, but I guess he's just as spineless now as he was when he left back when I was 5 years old. Still, I think I am a much better man because of it. AM I bitter? No, but I am disappointed in some ways.
