I dont know where to begin, other than to thank each and every one of you who left kind words and condolences here the past couple of days. I cannot begin to say how much it's appreciated.

Jeff, his family, myself and mom are still in somewhat of a shock as well. This happened so suddenly. Bear never ran into the street like this before. Given the very rural nature of the area, it was by horrible chance that a car happened to be coming at the time as well. The woman who hit Bear was speeding, and apparently made no effort to stop. She would have kept going had it not been for the screaming of Jeff's mom. When this person finally stopped, she claimed to be totally unaware of anything ever happened. This is highly suspect testimony seeing that she had hit poor Bear with such force that it broke off the lower part of the car's bumper. A nasty argument ensued, of course with her trying to place all the blame on everyone else.

When I heard about this all I wanted to do was kick the bitch in the cunt with my steeltoe boots until there was nothing left but a bloody crater. This would do nothing to bring back poor little Bear though. Still, I am getting increasingly fed up with people's complete lack of personal responsibility.

Bear was becoming such an integral part of our families. Growing up out of awkward puppydom, he was a great little handful of a companion. His first and only vacation with us to NC with the Mini Cooper fanatics was a pleasure, with Bear lighting up people's faces with smiles everywhere he went. He endured a 9 hour car ride each way with no fuss whatsoever. Katie, our friend and cabin-mate for the weekend fell in love with the little guy, and she, along with other friends of mine from the weekend, was crushed upon hearing the news. Our little baby is gone, but he will never be forgotten. One day shy of only 5 whole months with us, he really left his little pawprints in our hearts forever.

I have a lot of catching up on LJ to do, but with all that is happening, I know I will miss some of the goings-on. I read in [livejournal.com profile] notdefined's journal that his dog Nigel was hit by a car the same day as Bear. Nigel made out far better though, and for that I am glad. One fatal tragedy is enough. I hope to one day meet Nigel. And his loving owners.

I'm so sorry buddy. a bad person can really make things feel a lot worse, dealing with feelings other than sadness that take you away from the good times with Bear. peace Phil.

This made me so sad and MAD. I'm glad you got the horrible witch to stop. What the FUCK is wrong with people?! I'm really sorry and sad for you. Bear will live forever though in your heart. All my old pets live in mine.

I'm with you in your feelings with the bitch that hit lil' bear. she deserved to have her face shoved into the hood of her car until something like her nose broke, but I know, and you know that it won't accomplish a thing but vent our anger at the person who was so calous as to try and devert the blame to someone else, namely you all instead of herself. She in mind indeed a cunt.

Being a dog lover a heart since very, very young, I feel for you greatly.

Grrr. That makes me sad and angry and just... frustrated at not only the lack of responsibility of the woman, but the lack of compassion and empathy on her part.

I feel for you and I'm really sorry this happened to you all. Take care, buddy, and hugs.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. It sounds like you were the kind of guy that never took his pet for granted, which is a good thing.

Okay...bitch was just wrong. There's no way in hell you can hit an animal and NOT know it. PLUS, she was speedin'. And she's tryin' to blame everyone else? Oh HELL no. I'll go kick her ass for you. It won't bring your baby back, but it'll bring a half-laugh when I tell the police that I didn't realize I was hittin' her. I lend my strength to you fellas, if you need it.

I feel for y'all. Our dog has run out on us a couple of times. Luckily, she was never hit. She no longer is allowed without leash and we take great care with keeping the door shut.

One of the near misses made me read up on the legal issues when it comes to dogs getting hit. The law treats animals as property. If the dog is on a lead and you are holding the leash and it gets hit, the driver is liable for all medical expenses. If the dog is off lead (either in or out of your control), the law sides with the driver and the dog's owner is liable for damages. It sucks to have it be that way as pets are so much more than property.
