My future's fuzzy
Oct. 15th, 2006 09:57 pmAnyone who has kept up with my LJ, especially in the last six months, knows I have had more than my fair share of loss and tragedy. This past week was one that reversed the trend, thankfully. Jeff and I decided to go ahead and get ourselves a new puppy, especially since our encounter at the PA State Fair a while ago. We felt it was time to add to our little family again.
Introducing: Kodi!

( Follow me for some more Kodi kuteness )
Jeff picked Kodi up from the breeder on Tuesday. I finally got to see them both on Friday evening. Kodi is about 10 weeks old, feisty, playful and suprisingly well behaved so far. Not to mention about 4 pounds of packed dynamic energy and cuteness.
Inevitably the comparisons with our dearly departed Bear are bound to crop up. While there is no replacing Bear, Kodi is not without some suprises, both intentional and unexpected. "Kodi" is short for Kodiak. His markings and colors in many ways are very similar, though Kodi has more black in his fur on his back. He has similar mannerisms. The most unexpected surprise came when Jeff picked him up. Kodi came from the same breeding pair as did Bear.
Kodi is Bear's brother.
I hope all three of us have a nice long life together.

Weekend update - no Jane Curtin
Sep. 25th, 2006 09:46 pmSpent the weekend in PA with Jeff and his family units this weekend. Headed up Friday after work. This was also the start of the PA State Fair in Bloomsburg. Jeff and I took his parents once again to the fair. They enjoy getting out, eating fair food and looking at all the exhibits and whatnot. In addition to any imaginable fair (and not-so-fair) food, livestock exhibits, farm equipment, Larry The Cable Guy, rides, games and such, they have a 'dog show', which is a building showing off dogs for show and sale. Jeff, his mom and I went in, knowing full well that we might run into a pooch that would remind us of or beloved Bear. Well, we did, and the resemblance was downright spooky:

All three of us could barely contain our tears. The memories of what happened were still raw. But that is not the half of it. When we arrived a woman was fawning over the (unnamed) pup. She began telling us she just lost a similar dog after 14+ years. She was so tickled to see this one, but could never bring herself to get another one after all those years. While I can understand her feelings, at the same time one would only be depriving themselves the unconditional love that a pet provides, not to mention giving a deserving doggie a good home. We asked her what her Pom's name was.
It was Bear.
Here was a group of people brought together by a cute little pooch because they both had one like it, one had theirs for a (dog's) lifetime, the others had theirs taken from them way too soon. And with the same name.
It was what we could do to not take this pup home with us. but we felt the time was not right yet, and the resemblance too close. We went back later in the day and said our goodbyes and thanked our newfound furry friend for the memories he gave us. It was almost like saying goodbye to our Bear.

May. 17th, 2006 11:03 pmI'm really not ignoring you folks. Honest.
By now most have figured out my posting modus operandi. Late night post before hitting the sack in most cases, and any return comments happen the next day. With things being the way they have been lately, I've been too busy and quite often avoiding computerized social contact for fear of being a wholesale Debbie Downer to everyone around me. The times I have the chance, I go through my friends list and see what's cooking, and occasionally comment. It brightens my day up somewhat.
I have some photos to put up from the Dragon Run. Everyone involved had a blast, including Bear. I am still obtaining and sorting pictures.
More bad news about Mom, her cancer has spread to her liver and lymph nodes, but the doctors are mostly optimistic regarding treatments. I sure hope this is going to be the case, but the skeptic in me is not entirely convinced. Hope for the best, expect the worst, and with luck, a decent middle ground might be found. Or so is my thinking.
Hope all is well in your neck of the woods.

May. 15th, 2006 10:46 pmI dont know where to begin, other than to thank each and every one of you who left kind words and condolences here the past couple of days. I cannot begin to say how much it's appreciated.
Jeff, his family, myself and mom are still in somewhat of a shock as well. This happened so suddenly. Bear never ran into the street like this before. Given the very rural nature of the area, it was by horrible chance that a car happened to be coming at the time as well. The woman who hit Bear was speeding, and apparently made no effort to stop. She would have kept going had it not been for the screaming of Jeff's mom. When this person finally stopped, she claimed to be totally unaware of anything ever happened. This is highly suspect testimony seeing that she had hit poor Bear with such force that it broke off the lower part of the car's bumper. A nasty argument ensued, of course with her trying to place all the blame on everyone else.
When I heard about this all I wanted to do was kick the bitch in the cunt with my steeltoe boots until there was nothing left but a bloody crater. This would do nothing to bring back poor little Bear though. Still, I am getting increasingly fed up with people's complete lack of personal responsibility.
Bear was becoming such an integral part of our families. Growing up out of awkward puppydom, he was a great little handful of a companion. His first and only vacation with us to NC with the Mini Cooper fanatics was a pleasure, with Bear lighting up people's faces with smiles everywhere he went. He endured a 9 hour car ride each way with no fuss whatsoever. Katie, our friend and cabin-mate for the weekend fell in love with the little guy, and she, along with other friends of mine from the weekend, was crushed upon hearing the news. Our little baby is gone, but he will never be forgotten. One day shy of only 5 whole months with us, he really left his little pawprints in our hearts forever.
I have a lot of catching up on LJ to do, but with all that is happening, I know I will miss some of the goings-on. I read in
notdefined's journal that his dog Nigel was hit by a car the same day as Bear. Nigel made out far better though, and for that I am glad. One fatal tragedy is enough. I hope to one day meet Nigel. And his loving owners.

Somebody's tired:

The little guy aint quite as little as he used to be. He wants so bad to be a big dog. He's learning to cock his leg up when peeing against trees, but he still seems to prefer squatting to pee. I cannot help but giggle when I see him go up to a tree, lift his leg in a proud stance and wizz away. I dont have the heart to tell him that you have to lift the back leg that's closest to the tree.
They grow up so fast.

No "blargh" this time. I promised. Too much good stuff happened over the weekend that even a (necessary evil) trip to The Evil Empire (Wal-Mart) could not place a damper upon it. While I am not about to shed my Ebenezer Scrooge title anytime soon, events and actions that would normally occur take on a definite seasonal charm this time of year.
Big news first. Our little family has increased by one...
