Okay, I knew I wasnt crazy when my monitor on my desk began shaking and the dog got all antsy. There WAS an earthquake centered in Virginia. It had an effect all the way here in MD.

Is this California, or what?

just because you live near the easy coast does not mean you won't have an earthquake, and the way the fault lines run, the earthquakes are felt over a much larger area.

The strongest earthquake ever felt in North America was in southern Illinois on the New Madrid fault in the mid 1800's. It was about an 8.7 in magnitude, rang church bells in Boston, and changed the path of the Mississippi river in one section. That is actually still a very active fault line, with small temors about every 2 years, although I felt the 5.0 one in 1987 while I was living in the Chicago area. That one was felt in 16 different states.....
