Sometimes, even something as mundane as a doorknob lockset can be reengineered to be totally different.

Of course, this would never fly in the U.S., since all it would take is one idiot to pinch his finger in the mechanism and seek millions in damages.

what i want to know is how secure is it?

I guess the security could be designed in as well. Consider a version with the knob only on one side, there'd be no exposed mechanism to attack. But consider the difficulty of reentering the room if one forgets to flip the knob around.

I dunno. I think that lock design itself would double (or triple) the cost of the average door.

Looks cool, though.

Exaaaaactly. There are plenty of people who would line up to buy an expensive, quirky door with a funky lock.

Well, it's interesting, but as others have pointed out, it's got to be *far* more expensive, and really, does this actually solve a problem? Most industrial doors close by themselves, and must domestic doors be shut immediately upon passing through?

I see this as more of a design exercise than anything else. Like you said, there are self-closing doors and there generally isn't that much trouble in pulling the door shut behind you. However, this could be adapted to a security scenario where one person must open and close the door without taking their hands off of the knob for some reason or another. James Bond security theater kinda stuff. Or perhaps it could be done so only one side has the knob on it, preventing additional passing through of anyone else. One would be totally fuct though if they forget to put the knob on the outside once leaving the room though.

Yeah, imagine trapping yourself inside somewhere?!

I'm reminded of the old expression... "Don't fix it if it ain't broke"

But it is a clever concept

Yep. This is not really doing anything extraordinarily different. Now, when it comes to cool doorknobs, the Brady Bunch house with the knobs in the center of the doors was cool. I'd hate to be the one who had to bore that long hole for the latch.

very clever.

It's one of those 'gee-whiz' sort of exercises.

owning several Citroens, whose theme seems to be, how do we take a concept and approach it from a completely different direction...I'm imagining that that is a French invention.

According to the video source, this took place at a trade show in Hanover, Germany. It very well could be.

That's a neat solution to a problem I didn't know existed. . . until now.

Now it is all up to marketing to convince you that you have a problem, and they have the perfect solution.
