Farewell, not goodbye

I have lost just about all faith in LJ. Because of the unfortunate circumstances that made LJ a historically significant primary blogging platform for Russians and the fact that anyone from the region that happens to post something critical of the Russian government or political groups causes those parties to unleash a tsunami of DDoS attacks making the platform completely inaccessible, well, let's just say that a rusted out Honda Civic with a blown head gasket and a dead battery is more useful. Were it not for the really cool people remaining in my circle of LJ peeps, I would have pulled the plug (permanently) a long time ago. However, the viability of this thing has become so poor that I am finally going to move on to other pastures, but I won't (as of yet) leave entirely. I do have a Dreamwidth account, as well as one on Blogger, both of which are idle at the moment. Perhaps I will hang my shingle there, if I decide that "blogging" (whatever the term means these days) remains something something I still want to participate in. Granted, I am beyond frustrated now with the bullshit that crops up and I might eventually change my mind (again). I should actually be patient with the course of events that affect the service because it has huge political and free speech/information ramifications, but I am sick of being collateral damage. Oh well. For now, I am going to kick this thing in the corner and weather the storm while I take on other meaningful tasks.

Lest many of you miss my social intercourse and presence, I will attempt to post something truly interactive in the meantime. If you manage to get to this post, use this entry as a reminder of good times. Try not to leave fingerprints on your screen.

I am not giving up on LJ, these accessibility issues are not really the management's fault, but the Russian government who is using a denial of service attack on the site repeatedly simply to break down a dissident blog who is using the site to communicate.

I have a faceborg account but I don't particularly enjoy being data-raped by the company for every little bit of information.

I have a dreamwidth account but I almost never use it. I have a google+ account and I don't find it to be as blog-friendly as other sites. And I find bruisr to be just barely a step above those tumblr blogs that troll the internet for cock.

I am not sure what I would do if LJ shut down tomorrow.

See the fact eljay fights the DDoS garbage and presses still for free speech wins major points from me. I'm sticking around.

However, I'm old. I miss eljay but have learned the sad lesson that both things I hate and enjoy are merely passing experiences. I also need affirmation far less than I used to.

I will miss you, but I'm hanging on to the bitter end. I tried dreamwidth and it didn't cross post as everyone promised. I can't seen to post photos to either LJ or DW and FB just doesn't cut it. I don't know how to create a friends list on DW, so it won't be a viable option for me. There are topics I can't address on FB that I can on LJ. Different audiences.

Dreamworks, properly set up, and assuming that LiveJournal is not experiencing a denial of service attack...DOES all of the things you are having problems with....I use it every day and all my posts...photos and non photos , go through.

Maybe Tim can help setting it up for you. You can create an instant friends list of ALL you LJ friends...Dream works does that automatically too when properly set up.. Of course they have to friend you back...or post publicly for you to see their posts. You are already on my "grant access to" list...with all my other LJ friends. The term DW uses for "friends only" is "access list". Other than these minor term differences..the program code is virtually identical. The same team wrote the code for both sites.

In the very least...it's a great backup for all your years of posting.

if you haven't already, do a mass import of your LJ into DW. That at least seems to be working. Crossposting from DW to LJ has been dicey the last few days thanks to the DDOS overloading LJ - the crosspost fails due to timeout.

Why not moving to another more secure, sounder plateform (I would suggest Wordpress but there are other ones just as good I guess) and then cross-post from there to just about every other social end point (one being Livejournal) you choose to?
