Gotta wonder. Will Shrub do the right thing and select a moderate/progressive sort to fill Sandy Day's robe, or will he go with what his constituents undoubtedly want and install Jerry Falwell, James Dobson or Fred Phelps into the Supreme Court.

Welcome to Hell. Get out of the handbasket already.

There is *no* chance for "doing the right thing"... now, if you meant doing the Right (the far Right) thing, well, then yes, he would.

Alas.

Now, practice with me: "Je suis Canadian"

I've always liked Canada. And even though it's been a while since my last visit, Canada keeps impressing me more and more.

Not all of Canada is cold. BC has some of the nicest weather on the planet. Personally, I have a fondness for Victoria BC, as it's in what is known as a "rain shadow"... it enjoys the same temperate climate as Vancouver/Seattle/Portland, but without all that gloomy rain! –although being from London, I'm rather fond of rain and fog.

And yes, everyone should go down on people in open relationships. Oh, not *that* swinging. Nevermind. I was just hoping for a quickie ;-)

That's the spirit, man!

Now, more than ever, America needs real patriots who are willing to use the tools of democracy the Founding Fathers were wise enough to provide. There is a reason they provided for a confirmation process, and now is the time for moderates to demand reasonable nominations.

I often disagreed with O'Connor and Rehnquist, but I respected their legal scholarship and commitment to justice, even if they saw legal issues differently that I do.

I understand Bush's right to pick nominees who are of a conservative, constructionist viewpoint.

But the judges he just appointed to the Appellate Courts, like Priscilla Owens, Janice Rogers Brown and William Pryor, fail miserably on every dimension. They are not scholarly, they exhibit a strong ideological bias and have been frequently overturned.

Americans have a right to better choices for Supreme Court nominations, and I hope you, and a lot more Americans, will demand Supreme Court justices who will serve ALL the people.

This is no time to give up the fight. I'm with you. Now is the time to give it all we've got.

Patriotism: loving one's country enough to change it when it goes awry.

Jingoism: loving one's country so much that one thinks it's perfect the way it is, in every way.

You, sir, are a true patriot.

I take it as a challenge.

I fully expect that Bush is going to be so arrogant, he's going to nominate somebody totally unacceptable, as if to say, "because I can."

The challenge? Respond in such a massive wave of anger and dissent to make him realize he has finally pissed off the rational Americans who have been pushed too far and aren't gonna take it anymore.

The alternative is to just be quiet and let him get away with it, and I just cannot believe anyone with functioning brain cells who loves America could stomach that for a moment.

I have never been any kind of real activist in any area, but I have to admit that recent events, such as this, do stir me.
