Train Horns

Created by Train Horns

This is about a 12kHz tone. I can hear it. In fact, it's about the same frequency as my tinnitis, making it that much louder. When I was a wee young 'un (up through my teens) I could hear tones over 22kHz. My high frequency hearing was very sensitive. Thing is, it was more of a curse than anything. Television sets using conventional CRTs use a deflection yoke to scan the electron beam across the screen. The horizontal sweep frequency is about 15kHz. Television sets in use around my youth were generally old tube-based sets and even modern ones were rather inefficient. The scanning frequency would generally escape the set in the form of a high pitched tone. I could tell where a television was playing even of the sound was off and I could not see it. Living in a wooded area filled with crickets chirping gave me a loud cacophony to lull me to sleep. Even having these huge floppy ears just made things worse.

Being the rocker I am and given my love for loud music, my experimenting with audio and building amplifiers and such even before my teens, topping it off with untold hundreds of car audio wattage has taken it's toll on my once bat-like hearing. But a lot of that is also just getting old too.

No irony is lost in that hearing test being sponsored by a train horn site. I plan on fitting a set of train horns to my new truck eventually to help deal with other people's lack of hearing ability. More to the point, their inattentiveness from yacking on cell phones and being plugged in to their iPods.

Now, knock off that racket and get off my goddamn lawn.

Oh, me! Oh, my! A meme! Via [livejournal.com profile] furr_a_bruin:

Comment to this post and I will give you 5 subjects/things I associate you with. Then post this in your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given.
-= OR =-
Comment with five things you associate with me, and I'll expound on them in my journal.

He associated these five items with me. Hopefully not in descending order! ;)

1. Hard Drives: Okay, I guess it's tough not to associate these with me considering all the recent geekery involving two insane servers I created, one of them alone containing a total of 21 hard drives with enough storage that one time would have matched a medium-sized datacenter (Approx. 12TB in various redundant arrays). The reason for this is my insatiable appetite for digital media, and the unfortunate loss of some of said media in a couple drive crashes. The drives in the two servers, plus several external drives make up redundant online and offline copies of the music, photos and video I have, a great deal of which is irreplaceable. Does not help that it's a huge expensive hobby for me.

2. Performance Tires: I love 'performance driving'. While straight-line acceleration is fun and lots of fun to build for, I also like to take turns at amusement park-like lateral forces. So, much of what I drive now and in the past is/was fitted with some sort of better-than-factory rolling stock. Aside from the fun factor and humbling of those trying (and sometimes failing, even spectacularly) to keep up in turns, the safety factor was conveniently increased. Given all the idiots I have to share the roads with, it's been nice to be able to make some serious evasive maneuvers to get out of trouble being caused by inattentive or just plain bad drivers.

3. Burly Bears: A favorite of mine well before I was able to suss out the actual reasons as to why, big, burly, muscled guys always got my (inordinate amount of) attention. In my early years I was fascinated by big guys with big muscles, with beards being extra spice. Wrestlers, powerlifters, strongmen, just about any sort of thickly built dudes were often the subjects of fantasy. Not much has changed since. I'm just happy I eventually found myself to be part of the 'club'.

4. Music: One of the most important parts of my life, even before #3 above, music has always accompanied me through just about every part of my life. Songs from my past serve as memory landmarks. Hearing some of my old favorites will transport me back in my mind to those days. I am not limited to a narrow number of genres either. I find something to love in every imaginable type of music. Frank Sinatra to Frank Zappa. Mozart to Metallica. Blues to bluegrass. I tend to have progressive rock and heavy metal/hard rock as my favorite genres, but I don't automatically reject any type of music, since I have found gems in just about everything. As I get older, I find myself gaining appreciation for stuff I might not have particularly cared for when I was younger.

5. Motor Oil: Who doesn't love a well-oiled machine? I can practically say the stuff runs in my veins. Having been covered in the stuff more times that I could ever count, I could say I am somewhat fanatical about having the best oil running in all my engines, big and small. Some might attribute kink factors to motor oil, especially visions of me being covered in dirty oil and grease after spending all day working shoulder-deep in an engine compartment. But knowing how much of a mess it is to clean up, it's not one of my favorite 'scenes'. ;)

What am I happy about today? That the meme is over. What are you happy about? Probably that you wont have this cluttering up your friends list view any more.

But it was sorta fun.

I have another reason to be happy, that tomorrow is my last day in the grind until Jan The Fifth. I really, really need this break, and I hope to put it to good use.

Nothing too specific on the happy front, I finished up the garage door opener installation and programmed everything, fixed up the alarm system and installed the battery I had sitting around for ages. I will be able to install the second opener a lot faster knowing all the little details and changes I had to make. Jeff encountered icy roads on the way to work early this morning and ended up slammed sideways into a muddy embankment; a cursory check of his truck found no obvious damage or weird alignment issues, so that makes us both happy, especially since he did not get hurt.

Some computer happiness now that I finally got around to fabbing up a power harness for the last batch of drives in the megaserver, so now all the drives are functioning either as arrays or standalones. I also tweaked settings to get the external SATA stuff running in hotswap modes. I now have just about available connection method available save for Fibre Channel and Infiniband. I am not about to go that overboard. Just a healthy dosage of geek-happy.

And to make the rest of you happy, I have only one more of these posts to make.

More from the Garage of Happy: Picking Kodi up from the groomer. He looks awesome and smells nice and clean. He's really missing Jeff though, barking and mumbling while looking outside at the empty spot on the driveway. He wants Jeff to see how utterly fierce he looks.

I can now go back down to the garage and continue my tinkering there. The alarm system gets a new battery, the old battery was shot, and just recently totally came apart at one of the terminals. No more looking at the flashing battery warning. I also am going to work my tech-fu on the new door opener to try and allow other controls aside from the multifunction wall controller to interface with it and not throw the wall control into kernel panic every time the other control activates the opener.

It's Friday! It's part of that generally accepted universal happy. Unless you work in retail around this time of year, or your name is Jeff, who has to work tomorrow.

I am not off the hook either for tomorrow, it'll be a busy day for me. I take Kodi in for grooming, have to take care of business at the credit union, have some garage work to do, and I have to go back and help my friend with his house renovations. More electrical work, plus some carpentry/trim and upgrades.

I sure hope all the help I've been giving to everyone else will eventually come back to me in the form of reciprocity. I mean, I got a ton of stuff to do here and I really could use some help. However, it has never really been much in coming. I guess I have to be comfortable in the idea that the gift is in the giving, which, honestly, works for me.

No earth shattering happy episodes today, just some minor successes at work, a dinner of soup and sandwiches tonight and an unintentional nap. But it's happiness in it's own form.

New of the loss of Majel Barrett Roddenberry did temper any of today's happiness though. Her presence through the Star Trek universe was solid, fun and important. More than just Gene Roddenberry's wife, I think her voice as the Enterprise computers through the years defined her role in the series and in real life. Her role as the doting, meddlesome and flirty Lwaxana Troi was more than just comic relief, it had some powerful moments as well. My best memory was in the TNG "Half a Life", where Lwaxana falls in love with a scientist (played by David Ogden Stiers) working to revive their planet's dying sun. The twist here is that the scientist is soon approaching an age where those on his planet practice a form of ritual suicide they term the "Resolution". As with many Trek episodes, stories of the human condition take place, this time about aging, taking care of the infirm, and right-to-life issues taking center stage. Majel's acting abilities shine here as the fate of an entire planet stands uncertain. She will be missed. Yet, somehow fitting, she managed to complete her role once again as the voice of the Enterprise computer, and as such, the heart of the ship, in the upcoming movie. Mrs. Roddenberry died of leukemia.

Thank you, Majel, for all those moments, both happy and sad.

It's a happy-by-proxy day today. Jeff had a good day at work, culminating with a nice (and very deserved) xmas bonus. When Jeff da Chef is happy, I'm happy.

I'm also sitting here with a recently acquired Intel Core2 Quad 9650 CPU. I have to remind myself, "no more god boxes". Well, that was two god boxes ago. This is not just happiness, it's insanity. LOL

I've been giggling every time I see this. Of course, I had to make it a little bit more appropriate for those on my friends list:

Yeah, seeing this kinda makes me happy in my own twisted way.

"Post a photo of you right now.
Don't change your clothes or fix your hair
DO NOT EDIT
post these instructions"

Okay, yeah. That photo meme where one is supposed to take an immediate picture of themselves and post to their LJ without changing clothes, fixin' their 'do, etc. Here is my contribution.

photo meme

This is how I look this time of night. darkened room, cans on my head, music listening and some (hopefully) relaxing surfing before I hit the rack. Note the watchful stare of SpongeBob SquarePants in the background.

I had actually done this a few hours earlier, then got interrupted with a problem with Jeff's PC. The LAN adaptor is dead. Ironic, since I had ordered up the parts for his new one not ten minutes prior. I retook the picture to stay within the 'rules'. And yes, the beard is much shorter than it was at the football game. Sorry, [livejournal.com profile] furr_a_bruin.

I hate computers.
greatbear: (face)
So there is a meme running around LJ lately (imagine that). This one asks for a picture of one's self from sometime in the 1990s. I figured it was time to outfit this new backup PC with the scanning software and this was an opportunity to give it a shot.

This is from 1991, when I was building the deck on my house.

1991

In the 80s, I taught myself AutoCAD, which I would run on my whopping 286/12MHz PC. I still have the PC! My major project was this deck. I need to search for the disks containing the drawings. The deck is made with pressure-treated framing, with cedar decking, railings, posts and pickets, with a redwood top cap. I must have done something right, the deck is still standing and solid as ever. It's in dire need of refinishing, however. And only one board in it's over 60 feet of length is showing any signs of rotting. I have replacements.

Yeah, I looked like quite the meathead back then. I guess I still do. I cannot get over how much I was brimming with enthusiasm and energy back then. I thought nothing, nothing at all about undertaking the deck build. But prior to that, I only had a bit of a pause when I decided to take on building my own house. With encouragement from friends, I gave it a go. And, I must have done something right, it's still standing too.

I wish more than ever to be able to have this level of enthusiasm again.

Hillsided

This weekend was our last camping trip to Hillside, wrapping up four trips there, a trip to Deep Creek Lake, and, of course, Provincetown. Seems like it was not long ago that Jeff and I were planning these trips and so looking forward to them. Now they are ones for the history books. Where does the time go?

The weather could not have been better. Hillside is notorious for having freak storms, total rain-outs and snow in May. This is to be expected in a northern, mountainous region. This time, though, we enjoyed a perfect summer, full of friends, fun, frolic, food and dogs.

It was not a perfect trip for everyone, though. Jeff was stuck working on Friday, leaving it for me to me to fetch the trailer from his mom 'n' dad's place and haul it to the campgrounds solo, with Kodi never leaving my lap. Jeff calls me later in the day saying he will be much later due to problems with one of his staff. Two of our guests were completely unable to make it due to similar coworker problems, interrupting a tradition we've had going for a while. Chris, another friend staying with us had a damper tossed on his time by a troublesome tummy bug. But, we all made the best of things and had a good time despite the setbacks. We managed to find some old friends we havent seen in ages and took some time to catch up, picking up as if we had just seen each other yesterday.

Finally got to meet [livejournal.com profile] _angry_alan, smiling and looking anything but angry, relaxing and kicking back with his buds.

My Achilles's tendon was bothering me too much to do a whole lot of walking around this time around. Still, I made it up to the bonfire on Saturday night where we hung out with more friends and LJers. The strangest part of that evening? A rather excited youngish man came up to me and said he had seen me before, at first not sure where. He then matched me to the lip-sync video I did as part of the meme started by [livejournal.com profile] chrisglass a few years back, who he also mentioned by name. He knew the song I used as well ("Heartbeat" by The DeFranco Family). We chatted a while about all the videos that ended up being made and how much that meme made my day(s) at a time when I needed some cheer. I felt like an unwitting rock star, with my fan club of one. It made my night.

I woke up this morning to one of the most intense charleyhorses ever in my right calf, causing extreme pain for at least twenty minutes and a limp for the better part of the day. It still hurts, and I am afraid it might fire off again some time during the night.

We said our goodbyes, dragged the trailer home and relaxed, watching the closing ceremonies of the Olympics. We have one more camping trip in October at Knoebels, continuing a tradition we started last year. After that, the trailer gets mothballed until next year, hopefully to take with us to many new places. And old ones.

Seems there is a meme going around the ol' LJ. I am finally getting around to parsing out pictures taken in the last several months that I have been without my main workstation PC. I've also finally upgraded from my original Photoshop 5.5 to PS CS2. As it stands, I got a bit more learning to do with the new features, and the new backup PC has an utterly trashed color profile that puts up warnings every time I start the program. while poring over the many hundreds of shots, this one popped up, and I figure it met the requirements outlined in the aforementioned meme, which is for those cycle-riding bears out there to show off their calves. This was a shot I took of a smallish scratch I got on my leg that nonetheless hurt like hell for the first couple days. I got it during one of the many times I had been riding the bike around town.

calf

This shot will also serve as a reference after I recalibrate the new PC monitor profile. What comes out of CS2 is a washed-out version of what goes in.

As an aside, watching the Olympics tonight, I saw a job I'd like, which is to be the guy who has to lift the shortest of athletes up on to the high bar.

I now declare a meme. Everyone has to come up with a lolcal, lolbear, lolparamecium, what have you. Du it nao.

Now that March has draw to a close, it's time I run down the list and start answering the questions. You guys are a prolific bunch, I got a grand total of, well, one question. That's fine, most of you guys couldnt care less about this meme (or even about asking me anything), and besides, it make life a lot easier on me. :)

[livejournal.com profile] bearlover asked: What was it about Jeff that made you take the plunge?

Jeff was a total sweetheart to me at a time when I really needed one. After a couple rocky relationships I essentially gave up trying, and Jeff just, well, 'happened'. We met for the first time in person at the Susquehanna Valley Bears' "Bears in the Park" held at Hershey Park in PA. Prior to that, we would talk to one another online, and had for quite a while. Later that year (2000), we met again during another bear gathering at Rehoboth Beach. We hit it off, with Jeff coming down for a weekend to my place after that, and the rest, as they say, is history. While we are almost diagonal opposites in many ways, we rarely disagree on things. Jeff has been with me through the hardest days of my life, and somehow he manages to stick around despite my often disagreeable nature and mood swings. I never want to lose him.

So, that wraps up my question month. I know, lots of you are dying to ask me something, but unless you can get it in under the wire, you'll hafta wait till next year.
greatbear: (big beard)
So there is a beard meme going around. Just to show what mine starts to look like by the end of winter, I grabbed a shot of it at it's worst. I am in dire need of a haircut and a beard trimming. That will happen before the end of the week. Consider this a 'before' shot:

Salt: 1, Pepper: 0. And the ghastly pale white of winter needs to go. The light from the monitor and the LED lighting on the studio desk does not help matters either.

?

So, it's March Of The Penguins Questions time again. Okay, give it your best shot. Ask away, I will answer in separate postings. Comments here are screened, and if you want your question posted anonymously, just say so.

Ask away!

I thoroughly drew a blank once I started this as to what song to graph. So, this will have to do. Ya.

You guys are pretty creative too, it's escaped into the wild now.
greatbear: (Default)
Unlike the (very cool) graph-the-song meme which would force me to fire up Excel and make my Friday feel too much like work, the other meme making the rounds is quite a bit easier. Especially since I already had the pic handy.
