That cutie [livejournal.com profile] dencoartist inquired “If you could parlay your mechanical/construction/demolition talents from that same level of ability into a different genre altogether, what would it be?”

I think it would be making music. I am a (very) frustrated musician. No matter which instruments I have played over the years, I never reached any sort of competence that I was satisfied with. I can make a ton of music in my head, but making it a physical reality was always a mental stumbling block. I have perfect pitch but in comparison I could not carry a tune if it had a handle on it. I can make the sounds, but it’s always lacking to me. Hence it has been a tinkering sort of hobby for me throughout the years and a bit less more recently.

(I am so blushy right now..you have no idea!)

What a GREAT answer...c'mon...you'll figure out some mechanical way to make the music you want, mister.
I want front row seats at your concert!

It sounds to me that you're more of a songwriter than a musician. As for putting the music down, there are more and more advanced tools out there that could capture your stream of consciousness. Besides, what worked for me was once I captured a tune, I hang on to it, keep playing it and visualizing the notes and the tempo until I can literally see it, then I write it down. While in this "capturing" mode I try not to have ANY new ideas at all...

Hope you find a way to capture your tunes. As for not being able to sing. Well if Tom Waits and Diamanda Galas are musicians, you could be a genius!

I've been trying to develop my own sort of capture mode but... I think I'm too ADD or something. Every time I sit down about 10 more ideas pop out and only few of them vaguely related to what I wanted to capture. :/

Well I actually would love to hear a piece of ADD music. Maybe that's what Jazz is about...

In the design field, there are conceptualists and craftmen. Sounds like you two are both good at coming up with a concept but don't have the patience to craft and tweak it. There are so many people out there who don't have songs in their heads but if you give them a concept, or a segment of music, they could craft out the most beautiful piece... maybe a partnership?

Wow. Sounds kinda familiar. And I'm the one trying to make it his living... :/ but ah well. You read my other rants against myself.

But on a more ... perhaps 'uplifting' side of the coin, it seems like a lot music makers are never happy with their final product. I'm always amazed when someone responds positively to whatever it is I've done. So I'd just say don't let it become too little of a hobby if it means something to you.

*hugs*
