It appears one of my 'personal' emails addresses has been picked up by a spammer who is using it as a source address and firing off endless garbage while attaching other names to it. As a result, I am being inundated by repeated streams of delivery failure notices from countless mail servers due to bad addresses and spam blocking. It's worse than the spam itself. At least it's easy to create a filter for "Mail Delivery System". It's no wonder that email is falling out of favor as a preferred communications medium, especially for the youngsters out there. Hell, even at work, with it's very aggressive filtering system, it still manages to get through.

I have been getting a huge amount of spam via my LJ email address lately. What might have been a trickle of a couple per week that started two or three years ago has in the past months blossomed into several a day. It's no surprise though, despite LJ's feeble attempts to mask the LJ-based email address shown in profile pages, it's no big deal for a spammer to harvest usernames and append "@livejournal.com" to them. Poof, instant honeypot of victims.

What a more perfect way to gather LJ user names (and more) than to set up a site offering quizzes and memes?

Also, I have been targeted for a bunch of 'gay' spam pointing to various jock and leather sites. Those I often get in groups of two or three identical emails, the only difference being the gibberish used to foil spam filtering.

Spammers are useless people. If I had my way, I'd have them drawn and quartered.

Anyone else being similarly hit by this crap?

My LJ notification emails continue to be a hit or miss affair, with the misses taking a strong lead. If you have made a comment to one of my posts/comments and were expecting a reply, chances are I might have missed out on it. I have been getting an increasing amount of spam (almost exclusively layered anigif graphic-based) via my livejournal email account, my marking it as spam might be causing Yahoo Mail to kill legitimate stuff, then again the sheer drop in signal-to-noise ratio in email in general is making a lot of valid messages burn up on entry. Add to that the general flakiness of LJ of late and it's a wonder anything works as it should.

If all else fails, just keep knockin'.

LJ issues

Seems like LJ, at least for me, has been having some odd issues with post notifications. Some notification emails show up normally, but some either arrive containing the text of my post and missing the text of the reply, or dont show up at all. If some of you were expecting a response, I might have missed it due to not being notified.

Anyone else having similar problems?

Judging by the huge amount of spam I receive via my LJ address, it is also possible the some of the notification mails are being tossed as spam. I have a feeling a lot of the spam that arrives in this account is due to crawlers triggered by some of the memes. After all, simply adding "@livejournal.com" to usernames will create valid addresses to paid/perm users. Say NO to prepackaged memes!

I detest spam, I truly do. I want to have the chance to do nasty, horrible things to spammers and their ilk. I want to sledghammer their knees and elbows into pulp. I want to rape their spouses with hammerdrills. I want to have them watch their children passed around as hors d'oeuvres at the next NAMBLA convention held at the Neverland Ranch while I bulldoze their homes. Their devious, underhanded tactics used to get their schemes and messages into my face bely their true nature, and the world can do without people such as these scum. By extension, take out all the virus writers, hackers and whatnot that associate with these fucks. I'll be doing humanity a big favor.

I have to say though, some of these randomized sentence fragments used to evade various filters to get their message with the attached .gif hawking v!agra and ch33p s0ftware can sometimes be entertaining, almost poetic. I wonder if there's any sort of money that can be made from this. A poetry slam held for charity or fundraising or something. Or a new version of Elton John's Solar Prestige A Gammon. lyrics(?) )

Watch the spammers come back citing copyright infringement or something.
